MI Sheriff's Dept. Gets an Eddie Eagle Costume..

SHERIFF OFFICE RECEIVES $2,650 GRANT FOR GUN SAFETY PROGRAM
For Immediate Release December 13, 2006

Hillsdale County Sheriff Stan W. Burchardt is pleased to announce
that the Hillsdale County Sheriff Office has received a grant from
the National Rifle Association in the amount of $2,650 for purchasing
a complete Eddie the Eagle mascot costume. The costume along with
thousands of pieces of gun safety literature will be circulated
throughout the Hillsdale County during important community and school
events. The costume and literature will also be used during local town
parades, special events and programs to raise the awareness for gun
safety by youth in Hillsdale County. The goal of introducing Eddie
the Eagle is to instruct children to STOP! Don’t Touch. Leave
the Area. Tell an Adult”, a slogan which relies on law
enforcement officers to teach gun safety and requires the Hillsdale
County Sheriff Office to use Eddie the Eagle as a teacher / mentor
figure. The main requirement of teaching the official slogan is that
Eddie the Eagle must be portrayed at all times as someone who values
and is respectful of good relations with law enforcement officers,
community officials, teachers, parents, youth, senior citizens,
businesses and community organizations. This will foster an awareness
of gun safety education within the community.

The Hillsdale County Sheriff Office has worked closely with the
National Rifle Association in promoting safe firearms use and has
used their curriculum to teach over 800 students since the inception
of the CCP laws for carrying a concealed pistol in the State of
Michigan. These classes have been extremely valuable for the
community and continue to be a good source of police and community
partnerships. The purchase of this costume will allow our office to
reach more children in the greater Hillsdale County area by providing
quality “hands off” firearms and gun safety training. This
grant also represents a partnership with the Shooters Alliance for
Firearms Rights (SAFR), a Michigan firearms rights advocacy group
headquartered in Hillsdale County aimed at educating citizens on
important firearms legislation.

Btw..I took my CPL class with our local Sheriff's Dept. They charged me $50.00 back in 2001..I think its up to $75.00.

I'm thinking about getting my CPL this Spring. I found a guy who charges $60 around here.

Congrats on getting the local authorities to cooperate. Around here, they'd just arrest Eddie Eagle on grounds of looking suspicious, and being part of some pro-gun paramilitary organization.

Barbara. Congratulations on where you live. Does the sherriff plan to have officers wear this costume occasionally for parades and such? Or is it just for others to use, on a voluntary basis?

I have mixed feelings about Eddie Eagle, but gun safety is a step forward I approve of.

I feel there is a slight "never touch a gun, it is bad" message included.
