Ack! well, we are finally getting half of that bumper sticker-

To clean a rifle bore?

They get a cleaning rod with brushes and patches. Scrubby scrubby, wipey wipey. All clean. :rolleyes:

Sure a boresnake is quicker and handier but it certainly doesn't rise to the level of "necessity" And, in fact, it's hard to clear a plugged bore with one, which is why cleaning rods are still around.

I've seen it. Our Family Support Group held a bake sale to buy various stuff for the folks deployed.

Heck, the Army refused to issue me a set of TL's (wire tool) because I'm a 25U (commo), and they're only supposed to be issued to 25L's (wire dogs). So a retiring 25L gave me his. Almost every soldier I know bought his/her own Leatherman or equiv.


I like it, but why the Hoppe's? CLP works just fine, and is easily available over there. Why spend the extra money to send a different product?

Heh. I put in a request for CLP, and our supply guy harassed me about it. "It's banned now. Causes cancer or something." Hands me a bottle of Firepower-10 instead. Looks and smells like the same thing, but okey dokey.

My unit just got issued Otis cleaning kits that have a generic snake in it instead of the full length cleaning rods. If I recall, it has a single cleaning rod section so hypothetically if you borrowed three or four sections from buddies, you could punch out a round stuck in the chamber.

Why do I have this bad feeling that few other people are gonna buy their own additional cleaning rod sections in case of emergency? Screw it, I'm keeping mine in my web gear. Damned if I'm gonna let a jammed rifle get me killed.
 
I wonder if this is anything like that "Oh, we don't have enough magazines to deploy with, we can't (for some unexplained reason) get more through the supply system, so please send us all of your pre-ban 30 round magazines" that a couple of folks tried several years ago.
 
Oh I'm sure everything is on the up and up. The company is trying to increase sales of their product while providing it to troops who can use it. It's a marketing ploy (cleaning gear is hardly in the "not enough armor category") but is probably well intentioned.

So I wouldn't come close to calling it a scam. I just object to the idea that our troops are poorly equipped with cleaning gear.

That Otis issue is news to me. Even if it's some kind of nylon-wrapped cable that can be pushed firmly when supported by the bore itself, I'd be leery of not having a solid rod along for real good jams, say a round stuck in the rifling.

You can't bang on a cable or string with a rock to force a slug out.
