Cleveland civil rights attorney David Malik arrested with gun at airport, police say

February 15, 2015

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A prominent Cleveland civil rights attorney was arrested Saturday at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in connection with carrying a concealed weapon. "I participated in a target shooting class recently with a certified CCW instructor and I simply forgot to remove it from my bag," Malik said in a statement. "I used the bag to pack for my trip. It was a stupid mistake."

"What's interesting about David is he is such an anti-gun person," Loomis said. "He's such an anti-violence person, and of all the things for him to get arrested for, that really surprises me."

Its a headline on every news site when Ted Nuugents' wife gets caught with a gun by TSA, but its hardly a blip on the radar when an anti-gunner is caught packing heat buy the TSA

It is always do as I say, not as I do from the "Progressives". They are smarter/better so can be trusted with firearms while we can not. I hope they throw the book at him.

If this guy had similar or better name recognition to Nugent, it would make news -- some significant Hollywood type or something.

This guy is a nobody, though, so why would the press care?

Name recognition?

Isn't David Malik the attorney for the Rice family in the Tamir Rice case? Rice was the 12-year-old with the airsoft gun shot by a policeman at a playground in Cleveland back on Nov. 22.
That story has been prominent in the news around the country for awhile.

.

Interesting angle.

He forgot? He FORGOT there was a gun in the bag? How many guns does this lawyer own?

He's an idiot. You forget a string of numbers. You forget your wife told you she has an appointment on August 17. No person worth their salt forgets they put a GUN in a bag.

He's lying or mentally deficient. He shouldn't own guns. Someone should turn him in.

It is a bit disturbing that he OWNS a gun with his avowed advocacy of gun control. Then, if he took a class, why would he leave the gun, certainly not something that he's used to, forgotten in a bag. Then, he misses it when packing for a trip? Really? Is the gun capable of resembling underwear? Where were the other accoutrements, like a hearing protection or safety glasses, or unexpended ammunition, stored that he'd not remember the gun?

His choice of words is interesting, "news speak" really. "I simply forgot", and he practiced with a "certified CCW instructor".

It's not that simple to forget about a gun, especially a person who espouses gun control. Does the certification of the instructor somehow transfer over to him?

Reminds me of Hillery, I didn't lie when I said I came under fire, I simply "misspoke". Or Brian Williams.

They misspeak, we would get indicted for perjury. Seems fair.

Be interesting to see how the legal community will take care of their clown in Cleveland. You don't really think he's going to jail, do you?

"We support the 2nd Amendment."....

This "gun in the bag" incident isn't either new or uncommon both with pro-gun or anti-2A types. :uhoh:

The Daytona Beach FL PD Chief; Mike Chitwood was busted at the Orlando Florida airport(OIA) with a small handgun in his carry on that he did not declare.
Chitwood is pro gun & supports citizens using firearms to crime. He's been tough on violent crime too.

Many political wags and public officials say how they support the 2nd Amendment, but they don't want any CCW, open carry or anyone(but them or who they want to be armed).

I would need more evidence that Malik is "anti-gun" than the word of Cleveland Police union leader Steve Loomis.

I have forgotten my carry weapon and made it all the way into the airport with it in my pocket but never made it to security. I flew from Atlanta to Boston with a 6" knife with a gut-hook in my carry on bag and to this day I have no recollection as to why I put my hunting knife in my computer bag. There is absolutely no reason whatever that I would put that knife in that bag, but I did. TSA never caught it and I found it when I got back home.

When did "Progressives" become anti-gun? Theodore Roosevelt was a "Progressive" and he sure wasn't anti-gun. A century after TR and I support many of the things he championed so I guess that makes me somewhat of a "Progressive" and I sure as hell am not anti-gun.

This is why I own a separate bag to put my gun stuff in and a separate bag to carry on the plane. If you use the same bag for both purposes, it is only a matter of time before a slip-up occurs. A stray .22LR round could easily be missed even with a check job. Sure, he's an anti. But I kinda feel sorry for him. I'll bet the jail is pretty tough in Cleveland...

There are penalties for “mistakes”, forgetting, and ignorance of the law. Unfortunately, prosecutorial discretion is far too often “liberally” applied. As an officer of the court, his flowery excuse will most likely be accepted without prejudice.

Lets not get too excited here, last year over 2,200 people did the same.

Yea, it is ironic that someone in his position would do it. But almost all of those who did this were let off with a slap on the hand and loss of the weapon unless there were other circumstances. As they should have been. He shouldn't be treated any differently.

Stories like this make me wonder how many outspoken "anti" folks secretly horde weapons and ammo. Kind of a slight of hand trick on the general populous in hopes that when SHTF nobody expects them to be armed to the teeth. Kinda a stretch, but that's how a lot of these guys portray themselves...ultimate snake in the grass type.

Discretion gets applied often here, usually for people with concealed handgun licenses who are very much pro gun. Far too frequently, people forget they have guns with them and try and pass through security. They are arrested, miss their flight, and usually pay fines to both the city and federal governments, but rarely are they prosecuted for the felony. After some time and paperwork most get their firearm back.

Agreed

Because in today's parlance, "Progressive" sounds nice compared to "Socialist" or "Communist"... ;) The folks today have NO idea who TR was, let alone what he stood for and the Progressives of today are not the same of those a century ago, just like the R and D parties as well. They have all evolved and not for the better it seems.

TR loved guns too. He's also the one who coined the phrase "speak/walk softly and carry a big stick" when it comes to US foreign policy and the military.

In US political terms the label progressive does not mean the same thing it did in the early 20th century, back when Democrats were running the KKK.

The Plutocrats a century ago condemned Progressives as Socialists, Communists, and Anarchists so nothing has changed. It is possible to support federal government regulation of commerce and labor rights and still be pro-gun.

I won't give the guy too much heat for forgetting he had a gun in the bag. I forgot to check one of the side pockets on a bag once and airport security flagged me. Turns out I left a loaded 1911 mag in that side pocket.
Oops.
They were real cool about it. A Sheriff's deputy came over and asked me if I wanted it back when I came home (lots of paperwork) or if I wanted him to throw it away. I told him to go ahead and toss it. We were almost late for our plane.
The TSA people seemed nonchalant about it.....like they see it all the time.
I am not advocating forgetfulness, just forgiveness.

If there was no ammo near it, then as we all say so often, it is just an object.

"Anti-gun"?

No, the antis see "Pro-Safety" when they read that and will cry over the "injustice".
