Hi,

I've seen that Winchester 1200/1300/120 barrels have the Winchester Steel Proof stamped on them. I was wondering if this is just a marketing ploy, or do other shotgun barrels like Remington, Mossberg, Ithaca undergo the same proofing.

Also, regarding aluminum alloy receivers, does anybody know the difference between that of a Mossberg compared to a Winchester 1200/1300?

Far as I know, all American made shotguns are proof tested.

Remington's proof is a "REP" inside an oval, as I recall.

As far as the aluminum used in Winchester and Mossberg receivers, there will be no difference in strength even if the alloys are different.
Some alloys of aluminum, like 6061 can be heat treated, so the receivers would be one of those types.

In other words, don't worry about one receiver being made of a "better" alloy, it isn't.

There is NO US proof house, so how are they "proof-tested"? There is the SAAMI group that tries to set standards, but whether Remington does it the same as Mossberg, who does it the same as someone else is not quite clear.
