I just purchased a S&W 625 JM revolver ( .45 acp ). What is the proper crimp to put on my reloads ? I will not be using heavy loads. I appreciate all your help and input.
Thanks, buddhas
I make no change in crimping for my .45 ACP revolvers with the exception of the 250 grain RNFP cast bullets. Those I roll crimp just as I do when I use them in .45 Colt loads. When roll crimping I use a .45 AR crimp die.
if using moon clips, or .45 AutoRim brass, the cartridge headspaces on either the rim or the clip..
so although a taper crimp is typical for a .45 ACP cartridge, roll crimps are possible
I don't do anything different crimp wise for my 625's. If you use 45 GAP brass you get small primers that will allow for lighter trigger pulls with 100% ignition and you don't need tools to moon/demoon. You can also get the small primers with 45 acp Win NT brass but tools are needed to moon/demoon.
My opinion would be that if using moon clips you can either taper or roll crimp. If not using moons and using acp brass you'd need to use a taper crimp. Also, be sure your revolver is bored correctly for rounds without the moon clip as some were not. If using AR brass you can either roll or taper.
I find it just as easy to just taper crimp all of the stuff I shoot in my 625 as I only shoot stuff up to "factory" duplication loads only.
