I'm in the market for my first shotgun (primary use will be clay sports) and I've had it drummed into me from various posts here that proper fit is essential. I don't have any experienced shooting partners that could help me with this and I'd at least like to have a basic understanding of what I'm looking for before asking for a gun shop employee's help.

So the question is: how do you go about determining proper shotgun fit?

First, how close are you to Central MD?

Second, a decent rough check for fit is....

After making SURE it's unloaded, focus on a spot like where two walls and the ceiling meet. Close your eyes, mount the shotgun and open your eyes. See how close the bead and spot are. Repeat a couple times.

Some folks use a mirror.

HTH....

I used Dave' method with success. If you happen to buy a shotgun with a midbead, its quite helpful for seeing if your eye is sighting straight down the barrel.
