I just got a sling for my .22 and when I was fiddling with it I noticed that when I get in a hasty sling while prone it tends to tip the gun clockwise. When I noticed this I also remembered that the same thing happens with my Garand. Is it normal for this to happen or am I using the sling wrong?

The Hasty sling doesn't work all that well prone, popular wisdom is to use the loop sling when shooting prone.

Hasty tends to cant rifles in prone and sitting, loop is usually better to use.

Get to an Appleseed and you'll learn all about slings and more. There are usually several in IL.

IMO loop is better all-around, but hasty can be made to work and is still better than unslung.

:)

I prefer hasty sling for sitting and standing. It just does not feel right in prone.

Loop sling is better for prone.

Sometimes the hasty sling will induce some canting of the rifle, but first I'd want to look at your position to make sure it is rock solid and your support elbow is far enough under the rifle. The elbow needs to be directly under the rifle. If you were to drop a magazine out, it shouldn't hit the ground, it would hit the crook of your elbow.

And as others said, the loop sling is much preferred for prone.

I'd highly suggest looking into an Appleseed event near you. IL has a great cadre of Instructors! The National Map showing locations is found HERE.

The main webpage is www.AppleseedInfo.org

And this is a great "Primer" an Appleseed student put together that talks through some prep stuff. If you go down a few posts you will see a quick and dirty tutorial on how to build a solid position, with pictures.

I intend to go to appleseed in April but since they suggest having a sling I got one and was trying it out. Thanks you all for the replies, I do think that some of the problem was my support arm, and some of it might be the inherent deficiencies of the hasty sling. I'm not sure if my current sling can really work with a loop sling or not, but I'll fiddle with it some more.

If your sling doesn't work you can get a DPMS USGI style sling from Midway for about $10. They are listed as Garand slings.

Brownells competition slings.
