What properties are we to look for in a filler? Ive seen cornmeal and grits mentioned as fillers, also wads. A friend does pyro shows and has started doing huge fireballs by mixing common milk replacer from the farm with black powder. It produces a huge fireball and very hot. Combination of the powder and the fat content in the milk replacer that makes the flame. Do you want a filler that burns or just takes up space? Also on the job sometimes I have wood floor installers sanding their hardwood floors and if you take the sanding dust and throw it on an open fire it flames up like you through gas on a fire. Wood this work also. Hope these are not dumd questions? Twogun1975

You want bulk, not burn!

Stick to cornmeal and such. Filler that burns like what you mentioned will get you into serious trouble!:what: You want non flamable filler only......

Here's a twist!

Be sure to read the 2 entire manure threads. They're a riot!

I almost hate to get on this post for fear that you think I am full of BS but here goes. Awhile back we were talking about filler and I posted that the best filler is ground up dried cow manure. Not bull manure cause it don't work so good. I've tried em all and cream of wheat comes a close second but cow crap has em beat. You can load your powder and fill your cylinders right to the top and your balls will compress this stuff as much as you want. Don't worry about over filling or you can also leave a little space over the dried poop and smear Crisco or bore butter on it and not have to worry about it soaking thru it and compromising your powder like it does with some other fillers and wads. And I realize that cow crap might not be available in abundance on your grocery shelf like cream of wheat but I only brought this up as a reminder that sometimes there are alternatives albeit strange but usable none the less.

I got somethin to tell ya. Several years ago at the county fair on Sunday they had their local cow chip throwing contest. So I entered in the Adult division. The winner the previous year took me back behind the pig barn with some practice chips to show me how to win. He showed me how to throw and how to choose the ones that go the farthest. And let me tell you it is all about moisture control. The dryer your s#%t the farther your s#%t goes and I got second place out of sixty contestants. Well anyway last year a BP shooter told me about using ground up cow s#%t as filler. Don't use bulls#&t because it don't work so well. Don't ask why but I think it has something to do with the hormone injections at six months. But anyway you can pick up an extra 50fps and more accuracy down range up to and including 50 yards with this product. But remember along with keeping your blackpowder dry you have to keep your s#%t dry also. And also after you fill your cylinders with powder you can pour your ground up cow s#%t clear to the top till it flows over and then mount your balls because this stuff compresses very nicely.

Thanks for sharing that... I guess... Ha... Ha... Ha...

I'll stick with the cream of wheat for the time being.

if you sand a finished floor the dust if left in a confined container such as the bag from the sander it will self combust. beerman 45-70

How about polyester pillow stuffing? Works great in .45-70 cases...wonder how it would work for BP??

Cornmeal is described as being a little more compressible than cream of wheat. I have only used cream of wheat and it does not compress much.

I am of the understanding that cornmeal or cream-of-wheat filler will cake over time and cause problems. I have used polyester quilt batting in 45-70 Gov't. I do not find any trace of residue in the bore. Only a very small amount is used in each load.

beerman 45-70 you're saying if you leave some sawdust in a closed container it will self combust? Where is the facts on that?

I've been using cream of wheat with great success. As for compressibility, I don't necessarily want the filler to be compressible; I'd rather have the column of filler compress the BP.
