Hi NH gun owners - I'm not sure if you got the NRA legislative alert regarding NH state senate bill #44, but this bill proposes changes to the current CCW legislation.
The proposed bill, sponsored by Senator Peter Burling (D-5) and reps Lee Hammond (D-Grafton 11) and John Tholl (R- Coos 2) wants to allow more discretion to the concealed carry permit authority so that they have the option of denying a permit "to any person the official reasonably believes to be a member of a terrorist or criminal organization."
The text of the bill can be read at the following link,
http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/legislation/2007/SB0044.html
The proposed changes to the current law are italicized or crossed out. The bill also "prohibits the award of attorney’s fees and costs personally against an employee or official of a licensing entity."
To me, the proposed changes sound unconstitutional. These changes would allow a licensing official to deny someone a permit, not because they were convicted of a crime, but only because they are suspected of being a member of a terrorist or criminal organization.
According to the NRA legislative alert, the bill is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, 3/15 at 9AM in State house room 103. I'm going to contact my state senator and voice my opposition to these proposed changes.
