Hi NH gun owners - I'm not sure if you got the NRA legislative alert regarding NH state senate bill #44, but this bill proposes changes to the current CCW legislation.

The proposed bill, sponsored by Senator Peter Burling (D-5) and reps Lee Hammond (D-Grafton 11) and John Tholl (R- Coos 2) wants to allow more discretion to the concealed carry permit authority so that they have the option of denying a permit "to any person the official reasonably believes to be a member of a terrorist or criminal organization."

The text of the bill can be read at the following link,

http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/legislation/2007/SB0044.html

The proposed changes to the current law are italicized or crossed out. The bill also "prohibits the award of attorney’s fees and costs personally against an employee or official of a licensing entity."

To me, the proposed changes sound unconstitutional. These changes would allow a licensing official to deny someone a permit, not because they were convicted of a crime, but only because they are suspected of being a member of a terrorist or criminal organization.

According to the NRA legislative alert, the bill is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, 3/15 at 9AM in State house room 103. I'm going to contact my state senator and voice my opposition to these proposed changes.

It seems to me this grants immunity even to someone acting outside the scope of their employment.

I wonder if this might have anything to do with the "Free State Project," http://www.freestateproject.org

Quite a few people have moved or expressed intention to move in order to affect politcal change. Some of the new movers have already been elected to public office. I wonder if the old dems. there are hoping to make the state less palatable for liberty minded individuals, or if they're trying to make it more difficult for those moving to reduce government.

Or it could be as simple as wishing NH was renamed North Massacheusettes. More likely I suppose...

The cancer from Massachusets continues to spread North.
I grew up in NH. I echo that sentiment.

People from Mass like to vacation and visit NH because it is so much less socialistic than Mass (fewer taxes, less traffic, less gov't waste and corruption, less gov't programs to redistribute the wealth, etc.). So, they move to NH and start voting in all the laws that made Mass the marxist capitol of the US.

I was disgusted to find that the NH votes went to the democrates in the last election. NH used to be a Republican-voting state, then a swing state.

Have been an aquaintence of Peter Burling for 25 or 30 years. I'm not toataly suprised. Essex

Hi 30 Cal - what happened with Gun Owners of NH? What kind of implosion did they experience? Are they still an effective lobby on our behalf?

romma - unfortunately in the last election, NH went from a blue state (at the state level) to a red state. The Democrats control the legislature and the governor's office. They're already proposing several bans (trans fat, smoking, etc.) and tax increases.

The same thing....

....is happening in Florida too...gets worse every year. :cuss:
