What would be better if price did not matter?
An SKS that takes detatchabel duck bill mags, or a regular ol' AK?
Just curious to what you guys think the pros and cons are of the two.

Apples to oranges my friend. The SKS is also a good bit longer gun than most of the AK's among other differances. Ive used the 'duck bill' Tapco branded mags with an SKS and never had a feed issue with surplus ammo.

Why does everybody not like the WASRs? I have one and it has never failed to fire. No jams whatsoever. However, I did have to straighten the front sight, but that didn't take long.

The SKS was never intended to be used with a detachable mag. So if your wanting a detachable mag the AK is the way to go for sure. As far as reliability with the fixed 10 round mag on a SKS I've never witnessed a single problem out of em. The AK's I've owned and shot have always been reliable also never a problem. And let people bash the WASR 10 all they want if check for common problems on them and don't find any then it should be gtg the one I owned previously ran just as well as any other AK out there it may not have been as pretty but that sucker was probably my favorite semi auto I've owned to date. Wish I wouldn't have sold that one. But if money isn't an issue go with the AK you won't be disappointed and the ammo prices have come back down so ammo is out there and cheap. Just my 2cents

People love to bash the WASR's because their are some poorly assembled rifles mainly from Century out there that have canted front sights, dremeled mag wells to go from accepting single stack mags to accept double stacked. WASR's therefore don't have the dimples on the inside of the receiver to help hold the double stack mags in. Which can cause mag wobble from side to side, my old wasr had a little bit of wobble with some mags and some fit very snug. For example my wasr10 wouldn't take the 5 round chinese mags they wouldn't go in the rifle period, east german mags fit snug and probably were most suited for that rifle. My romanian/other combloc mags wobbled a little bit but it didn't affect the function. If the mag wobble is to severe it can cause problems. Some Wasrs also might have canted gas blocks which may have to be repaired. They're alot of great Wasr's out there and there are some lemons if you know what common problems to look for before buying then you should be able to avoid a lemon.

I second the thought that detachable mags suck. They are different weapons with the only similarity is the round it fires.

The SKS is a great rifle. The AK47 is a great rifle. Ask yourself what you need it for. Home defense? Most SKS rifles are too long and cumbersome whereas the AK is more agile and larger magazine. Hunting? The SKS would be a better choice due to longer sight radius and barrel.

The SKS is about 1/2 the price as the AK.

Some versions of both have chrome lined barrels while some do not. Keep that in mind.

To me chrome lined isn't that important unless your wanting to shoot corrosive ammo. I am almost positive that no Yugo SKS or AK have chrome lined barrels which means I'd definitely want to look at the bore of the rifle before I purchased it. Never know if somebody shot corrosive through it and never cleaned it.

I'd have to say the AK would be your best route. I tend to avoid modifying a weapon to do something it was not originally intended to do (SKS with detachable mags). Using an SKS with stripper clips is not a bad option either though.

Yeah, true enough, some of those WASR's are junk...but many are not. If you are on a budget, and cant spend 2k+ on a Krebs or other high-end manufacturer, or don't want to modify a Saiga, WASR's are a fine route. Just go to a reputable dealer, and inspect the weapon before you buy it. Many shops have a supply of surplus mags you can fit into the well to check for wobble. A good shop owner won't care if you thuroughly inspect the weapon right there in the shop. They know that if you are satisfied, you will be back for more.
