Some folks use wax on their shotguns as an added layer of protection against the elements, especially in a salty/corrosive/humid environment.

I've heard some recommend a finish like Johnson's Paste Wax instead of automotive-type waxes. Any particular reason, or just personal preference?

I use Johnson's Paste Wax on my rifles as well. I guess it's just because that's what a gunsmith showed me once and because the furniture wax is in the house while the car wax is out in the garage. I'm not sure though - doesn't car wax have a little abrasive of some kind in it?

A lot of car waxes and polishes do have abrasive polishing agents in them. I was just out waxing my truck with Klasse all-in-one followed by two coats of Klasse acrylic sealant. The all-in-one does contain polishing agents while the sealant does not. The acrylic sealant gives a tough, weatherproof shine to the truck for several months of Seattle weather.

Clearly, the sealant is good for metal, and most of my guns are made of metal, I am starting to think here........

The objection to some car waxes is that they contain mild abrasives. This may be good or bad, depending on how the firearm in question is finished. That said, I have used both automobile and furniture paste wax without any problems. If in doubt Johnson's Paste Furniture Wax is unquestionably a good choice.

Use Rig Gun Grease and rub it in.

If it's not to be shot, use the British Museum Rennaisance Wax. It's what museums use on wood, leather & metal to preserve it. Ph neutral. :)

I use Johnson's Paste Floor Wax because that's what my grandfather TOLD me to use, about 40something years ago. It worked then, it works now.

I find that Butcher's Wax

does a fine job. NO abrasives, lots of carnauba. It helps resist fingerprints and moisture, seals the metal parts and penetrates the wood. ;)

I'd probably use car wax, too, if I knew just what was in it along with the carnauba wax, but here's what I use:
