Hi, looking for some opinions/comments about the wear Marks on the bcg in the pictures below.

The pictures where taken after 250 rounds through a new 9mm AR PSA pistol upper and lower.

The hammer doesn't seem to show any signs of excessive wear or anything concerning.

Doesn't look right to me, what do you think?

Thanks

The finish at the ramp area looked just as good as any other part of the carrier, no shiny steel before shooting.

Doesn't look like wear to me, looks like worn and chipped tooling. . .
Yup.

Of course those grind marks were finished black. . . but they were certainty there to start unless you've been at it with a die grinder.

The hammer has worn the finish off the high spots on the cocking lug. The extra action friction would bother me, so I would smooth the surface. There's really no good reason to do so, and it won't affect function one bit.

I looked over the upper and bolt carrier pretty good when I first received it and think I would have noticed the tooling marks and uneven surface, I remember looking it over to try and determine if it was ramped. I could have missed them I guess but don't think so, i sure noticed them right away when done shooting.

From the psa bolt description:
Bolt Steel: 8620, Nitride / Heat Treated

Is the hammer material hard enough to cause that kind of wear?

Could the nitride coating "cover" or "level" the surface, hiding the tool marks?

If your saying the surface had to be like that from the manufacturer and covered, but still noticable, with the nitride coating then that's pretty poor quality eh.

I very much doubt any coating would be thick enough to hide those.
They would be much less obvious if they were black or even a different color, but filling that would be impossible.
I wouldn't be worried about wearing off the color. That just happens. Maybe quick in this case, but that's because it's rough.
Or, if it wasn't, that's a symptom of another problem. If that was smooth before, something's not right with the carrier. That's a definite lack of heat treatment, and even then a hardened hammer shouldn't be enough to cause that pattern. If it wasn't smooth before, something's not right with their tooling.
One way or another, it's indicative of something. I'd send this along to PSA.

I really appreciate everyone input. I value the input that's why I'm here. I dont remember that surface being so ef'd up out of the box, but I could of missed it.

Not concerned about the coating being worn away but more so the unevenness of the wear which indicates a problem or future breakdown.

Waiting to hear back from psa so we'll see what they have to say.

Either way it sounds like the consensus confirms it shouldn't be this way out of the box, or after 250 rounds.

Thanks Again

No way in heck that is normal.

I have a Colt Pattern PSA 9x19 PCC... the ramped portion of my bolt is no where near that "chewed" up.

Whether it was like that , and unnoticed, or has become like that... that is not normal.

Please do not fire it anymore.

Do you have any form of Binary trigger or Bump Stock in use ?

No binary trigger or bump stock. Nothing added.

Anxious to hear what psa thinks, a bit disappointed.

Thanks again

Paint the surface with a dark marker preferred black or blue, shot few rounds again if bright you have contact surface. However, as posted above by Deus Machina does look like rough machining.

Tooling marks and nothing more, I'm surprised ANY QC Inspector would let that go out the door, it looks like they ramped the bolt with a hand held grinder...been done before (DIY). if you can take a file to it to smooth it out, nice and easy...couple strokes then look it over, repeat as needed. NBD

PSA needs to replace it.
Yeah. If it was something I did, myself, as a project, it would be be a quick match with a file.
But from a shop, an operation that could be as little as one pass with a cutter, and even then would be better than that? This obviously skipped some QC. I'd be worried about what else they missed. You paid for that warranty, use it.

Update, so after a couple emails with pictures and a couple calls to support both the upper and lower are heading back to psa for repair or replacement.

They have good prices so I'm hopeful things are resolved quickly and I'll chalk it up to ## happens.

Thank you all for your input.
