PT92 Questions

I have a Taurus PT92 2011 production, had it about one year now and have put ~1500 rounds through it so far, and i have a few question about it:

1) what is the average lifespan of the PT92, like before internals start to break, the gun starts to fail, ect.? not talking about jams, ftf, fte, or locking block failures as i know you need to replace the block every so often.

2) life span of the locking blocks, and do beretta ones drop in?

3) reliability of the pt92?

4) hypotheticaly, say i was to clean and oil the gun up once, then shoot it continuesly without cleaning or reoiling, how long would it go before it malfunctions? (jams, ftf, fte, parts fail, ect)

5) is the lifetime taurus warrenty really anygood?

so far it seems to be a beast of a handgun, no problems at all exept one ftf with a sliver bear round, which after i pulled the rigger again it shot gthe round so i belive that was ammo relaited not the gun. I have put a heavier recoil spring in , a wolff 15lb to take more of the force off the locking block and the rest of the gun.

I bought my PT92 in '86 and shot a couple thousand rounds a year through it for much of its life. Its been my car gun for those years and next to my Glock 19 the most shot pistol I own that's not a .22. Two years ago after 26 years of service the locking block fractured a lug. I replaced it and dropped in a new recoil spring and its back in service for the next 26 if I live that long. So I can't tell you what its life span will be.

Reliability wise its been extreemly reliable with the only a few failures that I can remember and they've been reloads with quality control issues, hard primered Eqyptian SMG ammo that the hammer spring wasn't heavy enough to set off reliably but they where not reliable in the Glock for the same reason, and some steel case Russian ammo that would stick in the chamber thightly after firing.

As far as how long it would shoot without cleaning and oiling I couldn't tell you since I clean my guns after every range session. It will shoot at least several hundred rounds without issue but I wouldn't carry a gun I'm torture testing for potential self defense use. Sure would hate to find out what the limit is during a gun fight.

Beautiful looking 9mm you have there Steve, and thank you very much for the help. i've shot different types of autos ranging form 1911s to glocks, yet the PT92 holds a special place in my heart, one of the best all around pistols money can buy. Also Steve by cleaning do you mean field strip, wipe down, bore brush, patch, oil, reasemble or a complete piece by piece disassembly?

I have the PT99 which the only difference is the adjustable rear sight. I bought mine in 1982, have several thousands rounds through it and on occasion is my carry gun. The only time I seem to have a malfunction is after several hundred rounds without cleaning. I just oil it and it goes again non stop. My gun likes it a little wet. In my opinion this particular gun is very reliable.

Nice looking gun, i like the stainless with the wood grips, so ill take it the money was well spent, i looked for a long time to find a life time compainion to acompany my revolver to the grave, the pt92 just felt right, but i hadn't heard much about them untill now, seemed to be very reliable on par with a glock so far, expet alot better feel. thanks guys

by cleaning do you mean field strip, wipe down, bore brush, patch, oil, reasemble or a complete piece by piece disassembly?

Just the field stip and general patch and oil. Never did a complete piece by piece disassembly in all the years I've owned it.

Ok, thank you Steve, as of now i field strip, wipe the carbon off the frame and slide, then clean he barrel, oil up everything, then its back together in my night stand. thanks for all the help guys, you sure do make a newbie feel welcome, kodos to you.

The locking block of Taurus and Beretta are the same.
Taurus used to warranty the locking block by just sending in the broken piece.
But the last time I broke it they said to send in the complete gun for a warranty
replacement.
Getting the gun sent in costs twice the block price, screw that.
I just bought the block outright, $35.

I bought a 92 in 2010 and have about 8000 rounds through it to date. I have bought a Beretta Locking block that will work in it as well as all springs but have yet needed to replace anything. The only thing I've changed on it are the grips and have a 22 lr conversion for it that has a few 1000 rounds through it. I had a Beretta 92 for 4 years and consider the Taurus and improved version. Beretta has a little better finish but parts strength seems to be the same.

PS: I am bad at cleaning mine, I will shoot 3 or 4 IDPA matches (600 rounds) before cleaning mine.
