My barrel and stock have been ordered for my project savage 10. I have the receiver out and really don’t like the factory bolt. I see a nice looking aftermarket bolt is offered by Pacific Tool and Guage. It supposed to be a better bolt and make things smoother. I was going to order the bolt and bolt face from them, but would like to hear anyone with experience with this first. I’m hoping it is easy to do being that I’m rebarelling it anyhow and have it all apart to set headspace anyway.

I have used a handful of the PTG bolt heads. They do exactly what they advertise to do - provide a flatter, more robust, dimensionally tighter, and better finished bolt face.

They ship without ejector or extractor bits. Rather than strip the old bolt head, I prefer to use all new bits. From memory, you will need: extractor, extractor spring, extractor detent ball, ejector plunger, ejector plunger spring, and ejector retaining pin.

Buy them direct from PTG - it's cheaper than buying them elsewhere. They're not the fastest shipping folk - expect about a 3 week turnaround from order to receipt.

PT&G is gtg. The trick to ordering bolts is to buy bushings first to get appropriate diameters, less desired clearance. Not sure I’d say they are smoother, but they’re not rougher, and it doesn’t take much to spin them and put a polish on it. Sending out for DLC coating, and internal cerakote Elite on the action is about as smooth as it can be made - if you go this route, work with your applicator to ensure you make allowances for the coatings in your bolt clearance.
