Anyone know of any public land within 2 hours of St. louis that I can target shoot at? Weldon Springs/Busch/etc. all don't allow target shooting except at ranges. I was looking for some place to shoot further than the 100 yards that you get at local ranges and was wondering if there was any public land where it was acceptable. Or if you know of a free/cheap range where they have longer fields, that would be good too. I think I would be OK in the natl. forest areas, but those are a little far out. (I would obviously clean up/be safe/etc.)

I'd also be interested in this as I'd like to go to an inexpensive outdoor range and be able to shoot faster than one shot every 3 seconds. The Henges and Busch ranges are nice and cheap, but their rules on rapid fire are no fun. I get why it's necessary, there are enough morons that go out there who I have no doubt would put a few rounds through the roof given the chance to rapid fire.

for as your 100 yard need I blelieve Benchrest Rifle Club of St. Louis has ranges past 100 yards.

Yeah, that place looks real nice, but I'm a little too poor to afford the membership.. may have to do it at some point though.

The nicest range in the state is just north of Wright City.

www.shootingstl.com

Out to 600 yards (with pits - bring a -gullible- friend and some walkie-talkies).

Rapid fire is okay IF you are controlled.

If you are not, well, that isn't good.

$250 initiation, $200 year (or maybe the reverse - I don't remember), and you get a keycard. No hourly rates, and everyone is expected to be responsible for safety. Facility includes heated/air conditioned clubhouses, CLEAN restrooms and showers, and a kitchen/monster grill for larger matches.

RV hookups are available, but you gotta drive to dump.

Yeah, it costs money.

HOWEVER, if you go ten times throughout a year, and stay an average of two hours... Well, it starts looking a LOT cheaper. Plus, some of the folks you'll meet are world-class accuracy shooters. Club is active in handgun, position and benchrest shooting.

There are several unmanned MDC ranges within 2 hours of St. Louis. They only go to 100 yards, but there are few MDC rules for these ranges other than common sense. When I go to these, I usually find I am the only one there. Check out MDCs web page for these unmanned ranges.
