Hello All,

My wife and I are moving to Austin, TX next year after I get back from Iraq and finish up my remaining time in the Marine Corps. I've lived in California for the better part of my life and I want to get into law enforcement and live in a FREE STATE!

The one good thing about CA is the public land areas (mostly in the desert). You can go to the desert and do some rifle work, transitions, movement drills, etc...and bring your dirt bikes/quads along too!

Are there any public areas in the Austin area that you can shoot on? Somewhere you can set up some targets and do some range work? Off-topic I know, but anywhere you can do a bit of off-roading?

I've heard that almost all land is privately owned and I feel that this may be a problem for me (which is a shame because that is my ONLY concern regarding moving to TX).

Any input is very much appreciated!

You heard correctly. There are some ranges and private clubs, but there isn't any public land that you can just go to for target practice or dirt bike riding. I grew up here, and never knew we had it bad until I moved to college elsewhere and found out there were states where you could just pull off on a back road and go shoot.

If I was to buy some land, how many acres would I have to buy in order to shoot on it?

Austin will be as close to living in California as you can get, and still be in Texas. They don't call it Moscow on the Brazos for nothing. You'll need to find someone with land, or join a club.

shooting on private land-

I know Bastrop County (where I live) has a minimum 2 acre rule for shooting; alot of other counties don't have this rule, and so long as you're safe, talk with the neighbors & maintain good relations, there seems to be no problems.
Don't go moving into an area & think just cause you got 5-20 or whatever acres somebody won't pitch a bit#h.
Remember, alot of other folks from all over are moving into all areas of Texas, and some of these are "sheeple" that think a cop will be at their beck & call, therefore there is no use for private ownership of guns. Yes, even here in the bastion of the "real" old west, there is still some crybabies who don't like guns.

BTW, when did the Colorado River in Austin turn into the Brazos?
