Where to shoot in AUSTIN (besides ranges)

I'm thinking of moving to Austin, Tx and just got back from visiting last week. It looks promising but the shooting opportunities seem limited so maybe some natives can help me out. I'm from Arizona now and am surrounded by national forest which I can easily go out into and do some recreational shooting anytime I want. While in Austin I noted a few ranges but noticed no national forests or other land where you can just drive out and shoot! So what is the process and law? Do you have to know somebody w/ land to be able to shoot in the wilderness??

90% of Texas is privately owned. Not much public land and no firearms are allowed in state parks. you can lease land to hunt/shoot on from private owners, some places can be expensive.
There are some good ranges around. The range I belong to is pretty nice. Bexar Community Range, annual dues are cheap as well as range fees if you are a member. http://www.claytargetsonline.com/club.php/2294
They also have a pistol range and a 100 - 200 yard rifle range.

I and quite a few other THR members are also members of Austin Rifle Club, located about 30min east of downtown, outside the town of Manor, TX. Dues are about $75/yr, has several rifle and pistol ranges, and hosts a large number of shooting events throughout the month (CMP, 4-H, Hipower, Silhouette, etc.)

Texas Tactical also just opened up a range south of Austin, and they do IDPA/3gun/Carbine down there all month.

Besides ranges? No where. As said, the vast majority of Texas is privately owned. If you want to shoot somewhere that isn't a range, buy some land.
