I purchased my nephews present today. I ended up going with the Ruger .357 Blackhawk in stainless steel finish (pictured). I figure if he can learn to become an expert with this pistol he will be able to shoot anything. He can shoot full .357mags when out camping and less expensive .38 rounds when practicing. Plus, I believe it is an item that will be in his family for generations to come. Not to mention that I am just plain partial to Ruger SA revolvers and since I was paying...:)

Not straw purchase, but he can't ship that thing across state lines to his nephew if he's under 21.

Anyway, I wish I had a cool uncle too (I have 2, one's a hippy that looks like Michael Moore and the other is a Highschool Art Teacher...no guns from either of them :( ).

I know it's not a straw purchase, just seems like we have this argument every time someone buys a firearm as a gift. It's been a while so I'm getting ready for a good argument ;)

If I remember the original thread correctly this is a legitimate gift. Not one of those legally sketchy (although ethically A-OK) situations where junior has saved up money from his paper route.

Anyway, good choice. I'm sure he'll love it.

Ha, so you went with the Cowboy gun, eh? Good choice, good all around gun. Like we were saying in the last post, a .357 revolver is probably the most versatile gun in existance. I'm sure its a firearm that can be passed on to future generations (which you said you wanted). Glad you didnt go with the SA .22, because those things are a real pain to load and unload.

Congrats on a great choice, and like I kept saying before, I so wish I had an uncle like you growing up.:D

Yeah, hard for me to resist a good single action revolver. I want him to learn to love the basics as well as flashy auto pieces. I think this will be better for him to learn the basics on also.

As far as it being a straw purchae...not a chance. it is a legitimate gift to a family member. I plan to carry it back to him when I go back for x-mas. he can legally own one in WV but not purchase so i will have to transfer it to him once I am there. I need to look more into what I need to do.

Yeah that's sweet!

Do you mind if I ask how much they go for?

I would be more interested in a blued model which would be slightly cheaper.

Right now, there are 3 Ruger SA revos in "Foggy's Artillery Locker"..

Sheriff's Model Vaquero Glossy Stainless .357 (3-3/4" or so barrel)

50th Year "Flat-Top" Blackhawk .357

50th Year Single-Six .22LR/.22Mag.

My first .357 was a 3-screw Old Model BH...cried like a bay for 2 weeks when it was stolen.

p.s. "Hey, Unc Playboy...I Still need that long-barrel Vaquero in .45 for my birthday....."

Have it transfered to a local FFL dealer, and his legal Guardian will fill out the paperwork, and be the gun's legal owner. It will be the legal Guardians handgun, and he may use it if/as the legal guardian so desires. IIRC, the Youth Handgun Safety Act requires <18 year olds to have written permission from a parent or guardian in order to posess a handgun. Keep everything legal that way.

Wish I had uncles like you when I was 16! I used to get sweat shirts or cheap knives for presents.

What part of WV? It will be a great gun for him to carry hiking and so forth. Black bear population is pretty healthy in WV.

Why can't I have an uncle like you. My uncle bought me a stupid suitcase for my 7th birthday. At least I had a grandfather who gave me knives and guns.

I think .357 is probably the answer to the inevitable "What round for MothMan?" thread.
I don't know...that might not stop him. You might need a .50 caliber or a .454 casull. He would probably just laugh at a .357mag just like drug addicts supposedly do. :D

You're a good man PP - I have no kids of my own yet either, but my nephew is 7 years old so all "his" guns I've purchased over the past couple years are resting comfortably in my safe until he's old enough.

All kids should be so lucky to have such generous uncles :)
