Yet Again, What Gun for Nephews?

With professional instruction everything is better. I've taken shotgun classes and have seen proper weapons handling with shotguns.

However, one quick trip to the shotgun range will give one a huge case of the wobblies as far as weapon discipline and shooting is concerned. Shotguns promote (not to say that instruction will not help) mashing of triggers and sloppy gun handling just as Jeff Cooper said.

They will get shotguns, but not before they can break par on El Presidente or Rifle 10.

Don't drink the Koolaid

El T,
While I GREATLY admire Cooper and the vast majority of what he taught-teaches, I do not agree that shooting shotguns promotes mashing of triggers and sloppy gun handling. There is nothing about shooting shotguns at aerial targets that encourages or is benefical of poor trigger control. I strive for a surprise trigger break shooting clays just like shooting rifles and handguns. I am a current or past competitor with all three.

I do admit that you can see sloppy/scary gunhandling on many/most shotgun ranges, the same can be said of many rifle and pistol ranges.

But I believe there is plenty of reasons to start kids with rifles and/or handguns first......I also believe that shooting shotguns also give kids a game with INSTANT FEEDBACK....when you hit the clay, it EXPLODES....that holds their attention and really does a good job of getting them HOOKED on shooting. Steel targets help quite a bit with rifles and handguns also....

Either way, I applaude you for working with the kids:D My wife and I have a group of young'ens [29 of them this season] in the SCTP program, and I get an amazing amount of satisfaction from our program. For a couple that doesn't have kids, it is a gift;)

give them high power loads of recoil

i would go strait for a ww combo mauser, mosin, enfield, or a grande. give the a part of history. and its somthing to have fun with.

It depends how old the nephew is.
If he's a younger kid, between the ages of 4 and 8, well then, a .30 Carbine should have sufficient stopping power to take him down. However, if he's a teenager, you may want to go with something heavier, 5.56 NATO or 7.62 Soviet to give a little more oomph for those rowdy adolescents. If the nephew in question is an adult, then 7.62 NATO and the like should be sufficient for a clean kill.
Oh, you mean you want to give the gun to him...
Oh...
Well, then...
;)
