I'm considering purchasing a used Mini-14 and was wondering: What year did Ruger change to the heavier barrel? Were there any other significant design changes that are worth holding out for?

Thanks.

I believe the re-tooling was done in 2007 but its been reported that the heavy barrel remained on earlier models i have a 580 series and its a great gun, much more accurate then my old one. If your looking for one the 580 series is the way to go.

When you say "580 series" is that first part of the serial number that you're talking about?

Yup, the first three digits.

I have a 188- Ranch that works very well too. The thin barrel on the earlier models just get hot quicker, and then the point of aim wanders around the paper. Mine get hot and goes up and to the right, but knowing this, it's still game on, just hold low and left on those bowling pins in the bottom half of a mag dump... but a cold barrel zero for hunting works just fine.

That said, i wouldn't hesitate to buy an earlier Mini, knowing about the loss of accuracy as it gets hot......but i would negotiate a lower price using that info...

I have shot some accurate in the 190 series but the 580 and up do seem to shoot very well.

I recommend an early GB (580 series). GB series are reported to have been built to a higher standard than civilian rifles. I have an early "OHP" GB with a funky factory stock that resembles that of an M1 carbine. It is a fun plinker and a nice change of pace from an AR.... and reasonably accurate.

i would recommend a 580 series or newer with the tapered barrel the very first ones were 580 series but still had the skinny barrel. if you get an earlier version get a barrel strut from accustrut, or har bar, or mo rod. also if you goto perfect union mini 14 forum their is everything you could ever want to know about the mini. their is also a for sale complete firearms section some used mini's there. cdnn has mags at good prices, i recommend the ruger factory as they are very reliable. ps i love mine it is light, reliable & accurate not a bench shooter but accurate enough for me. the newer ones also have good open sights. good luck to you.

Yes, it seems the newer models are built a bit better.

Stay away from the original #180 series, as parts for these are no longer available.

Also remember, that with a few skills and some care, most any model Mini can be made to shoot.

So, if you should come across a Mini at a really good price, you might want to pick it up. It can be made to do well.

They'll all be reliable (well, with good magazines, they will), but accuracy is hit or miss. My 188-series Ranch Rifle was absolutely dependable, but accuracy was awful (though a cut and crown to 16" and threading for a heavy flash suppressor probably would have improved things significantly).

The 580- and up guns have a much better reputation for accuracy.
