Purchasing firearms in contiguous states?

We're off to Virginia tomorrow to visit the in-laws for a couple of days and there's a chance we may do some gun store prowlin' and growlin' while out of the People's Republic of Maryland.

Here's my understanding of law....watch my back here:

It is legal for a resident of Maryland to purchase a non-regulated firearm (IE no handguns, or "assault weapons") in Virginia just as if they were purchasing a cash and carry firearm within the borders of Maryland. So...if I find a Mosin Nagant, shotgun, etc I could legally buy it and bring it home without hoards of BATFE agents raiding my house for a federal firearms violation.

The contiguous state rule was repealed by FOPA and you can now purchase rifles and shotguns from a dealer in any state as long as the transaction is legal in both your state of residence and the state of purchase. You cannot purchase from an unlicensed individual, only a licensee. A few states have laws on their books limiting their residents to purchases in contiguous states. They are remnants from GCA 68 and were not repealed when FOPA did away with the contiguous state rule.

Thanks for the reply. I did a little further research last night, starting with guncite.com and found that I can basically buy anything that's not a handgun or is defined as an "assault weapon" by the state of Maryland.

Maybe, by being in Free America, I can find a better deal than what is commonly available here in MD.
