Hey guys, so i am thankfully 21 now, by a couple days, I've been looking around and finally decided I'm buying a Springfield XDM 4.5" 9mm for $500, From Boss man. i was wondering if anyone had any input on doing a bill of sale type thing for documentation of ownership - is it valid and accepted by states if needed to be presented? Any common Flaws or advice on any common issues on the xdm's?

Happy Birthday

It depends much on the State where you live.

If you want the maximum documentation, have the transfer done by a firearms dealer (though he will certainly charge you between $10 and $50 for the service).

Going to web sites like "Legalzoom" or do a Google search for "Business forms-Bill of Sale" will get you some text to put in a document. Also office supply houses sell blank bills of sale.

The particulars that I (off the top of my non-lawyer head) are that the price (or trade items), date, serial number, description of the gun and all accessories coming with it, the buyer's and seller's names and perhaps identifying features like Drivers License numbers. Also any other terms, like warranty (if the seller guarantees functionality) and sometimes a clause certifying the owner's right to sell the item. This last item always seems to me to be overkill, though.

I just use date, item description (complete), price, seller's name, buyer's name.

Copies for both the seller and the buyer.

Any advice on the XDm? Yeah, I hope you like it because it won't give you any reason to get rid of it. If used properly the grip safety gives you an added layer of confidence when re-holstering and you don't have to pull the trigger to disassemble it. You will enjoy this pistol for a long time to come as long as you stay away from "the kool-aide".

I've never sold a firearm FTF, but have sold several vehicles that way. I usually just have the buyer sign a form that states that, as of the date and time of the sale (noted on the form), they assume full responsibility for the ownership and use or misuse of the vehicle. Of course, the vehicle is identified on the form by make, model, and VIN.

Anything more on your gun purchase may also depend on state law where you are.

Good luck. Welcome aboard the ranks of "American Handgunners".

Awesome, thanks guys. now to just wait for my purchase permit acceptance or denial letter... literally already paid my boss. even have plenty of 9mm to take it out same night of getting.

So sorry

I can't imagine living in a place where I have to ask permission to buy a tool.

I am so fortunate to live in Alaska.

Check state laws to be sure, but as far as Federal law goes, if you're legally able to own a gun and you're both residents of Nebraska, he can legally sell you a handgun FTF. Many sellers will want to do a bill of sale these days - and it makes sense to cover yourself. I would too.

Once you have the XDM, get several extra magazines for it. I'd start getting them sooner rather than later - it's an election year, it's a tense election, and I'd be surprised if the panic doesn't start relatively soon. It'll be years before you can wear out a good magazine, if ever. But get as many as you think you'll "need" and add a few more to keep in the bottom of the sock drawer just in case.

And congrats!
