Could you cast a pure lead 5.56 bullet, with no jacket? Or rather would it hold together when fired?

Lyman shows cast .223s to more than 2000 fps, but they are #2 alloy, not "pure lead."

I would expect a pure lead bullet to top out about .22 Short performance.

Pure lead bullets are used in low-velocity low-twist muzzle loaders only.

A properly allowed lead bullet, on the other hand, can work well in .224 bores, but not at jacketed velocities.

223/cast lead at a mere Lyman#2/BN:15 easily handles 2,500 fps

First post says: "I've used the Lee 223 boolit, not even working up a load, but going for 2500 or so FPS, we had 2-3" @ 100m, and that was PC'd and no GC. Could have gotten alot better, but for plinking ammo, it was awesome."

Does "PC'd" mean power coated? If so it puts it in slightly different light. Granted, I'm not a "boolit" guy, just shoot lead in .45 sometimes.

I'm guessing you didn't mean pure lead as in the alloy but a plane lead bullet with no jacket or gas check. Yes, you can shoot Cast bullets in the .223 but I would think you will need a BHN of at least 15 of 16 with a good quality lube. The bullet diameter should be at least .225" .

"PC" does mean Powder Coated. Powder Coating is an alternative to lubricating bullets. The purpose of both Powder Coating and lubricating is to prevent leading.

I find it hard to believe that anyone got 2-3" groups at 2500 fps without GC (gas check) though.

If you did, would it survive feeding into an AR? Or would it deform on the feeding ramp? I have no idea, just curious, I've only ever shot FMJ out of mine.

I regularly run Lyman #2/BHN=15 ( lubed w/ LLA/ALOX ) in my AR-15/223, AR-10/308, M1-Garand/30-06, M1A/308, Ruger 44 Carbine, and (drumroll please) BeoWOOF/50
I've never encountered the port/gas tube issue to date.

Pure lead or real soft lead...no. The faster the bullet and the tighter the twist the harder a bullet has to be. There is a point of diminishing returns for each factor IE bullet hardness, velocity , and twist.
