I was wondering if Boyds stocks are capable of holding a bull barrel. Reason I ask is that with Savages regardless of model 10/11, they inlet for 3/4 inch at end of barrel. That leaves me with roughly 1/8" to remove which isn't a big deal, assuming the stock is wide enough.

I realize a bull barrel is a lot of weight out there, but there are a lot of mods for these stocks such as putting stiffeners, etc. Ill have to inlet for the PTG or CDI DBM, and depending on the feel of the foregrip, Ill widen it. I dont like "U" shape fore ends. A more triangular shaped stock is much more comfortable to me since its flatter on the bottom and my fingers curl around it nicely. :)

I have a 10/22 with a Green Mountain bull barrel in a Boyds laminate wood stock. Fit just fine with no work on my part other than tightening the screw. I don't recall now, but is barrel diameter a menu choice on their site?

Unless I'm mistaken they make stocks for both standard and heavy barrels. If not it isn't terribly hard to remove some stock material.

From the Boyd's website, under "how to select a gunstock":

Sporter or factory barrel: The most common version of most sporter rifles is a standard weight barrel. This contour is used on the majority of Boyd's stocks. These will be listed as the factory contour unless otherwise noted.

Bull Barrel: This barrel is usually a straight contour, usually 1" or 1.250" diameter. Inletting of the barrel channel will be needed on our BBC stocks or on our heavier forend stocks i.e. Varmint thumbhole.

IMO, it would be worth a little woodwork to make it fit. I put a Boyd's thumbhole stock on my Marlin X7 and it is a very nice stock.

Okay, thanks guys. Thats basically what I was wondering. I was mainly concerned that the fore end wouldn't be wide enough and would be too thin if I channeled for a bull barrel.

The people at Boyds told me I would have to get a Pro Varmint or a Thumbhole Varmint in order to have enough meat on stock to ream out for a varmint contour barrel thicker than .75 inches. Other contour stocks wouldnt do that the varmint style stocks would go to 1.25 I believe. I have a thumbhole stock on my Savage 22-250 works fine looking for one for my Ruger VT. Kinda wanted plain laminated without modification. Boyds are good stocks

Okay. Thanks. I forgot to put that in the OP. I was looking at the Pro varmint as of now. Although for all intents and purposes, that thumbhole may be better. I actually like the tactical thumbholes the most which they dont offer, but Ill see.
