"Man's inhumanity to man" has been commented upon since writing was first invented, I guess. Doesn't matter how primitive nor how sophisticated, there will always be brutality--physical, emotional or both.

The problem is, the UN didn't start the cannibalism. They didn't start the fighting which has led to it. And I really don't see how anything this side of a gazillion troops could put an end to the fighting brought about by the mix of tribal hatreds and corrupt politicians.

The hopelessness of the whole deal is that no outsider can change the minds as to hatred. The only solution is some format similar to the USSR and the Balkans. Even there, that "solution" only lasted some 45 years...

I didn't say they did.

The problem with the U.N...no let me rephrase that...one of a million problems with the U.N. is that they dupe people - in this case Pygmies - into thinking that wasting time with the U.N. will change/fix/help the problem(s).

My cynicism about the UN is such that I'd be quite willing to believe they did not know the pygmies were there--until reports/complaints began...

The next stage in UN operations is to give consideration to what, if anything, should or could be done. The final decision is to decry such behavior against the pygmies, with the hope that discussion and negotiation might be helpful.

The real answer is to arm the pygmies.

Thugs want victims, NOT a fair fight in someones neigborhood.

Knowing the UN they will try a volentary gun buy back program.
 
Mark, I claim no depth of knowledge about Pygmies, but my understanding is that they generally lack aggression; they're not very warlike. This is a handicap not readily solvable by guns.

Given their alleged skills at woodscraft, I'd guess any cut-down .22 rimfire would work quite well. If your first awareness of a potential for a fight is a bullet in your head--or your buddy's head--you might rethink your diet.

What gun would you suggest for the pygmie defense forces, given their small physical stature?

In the home environs of the Pygmies, this would be perfect. Anyone that waded into the jungle after the little guys would be met with suppressed fire that would seem to be coming from no particular direction. Even canibals would take the hint and look for dinner somewhere else.
