A local shop got in a Python. It is a 4 inch, blued model. It has black rubber grips on it. It locks up good, but it is not in great cosmetic condition. There is bluing loss on the barrel and a little pitting at the end of the barrel. There is a turn line, and a little blue loss on the high edges of the cylinder.
The story behind it is, it was carried by a local guy in his truck for years. He had it in some kind of holster setup where it sat, nose down, through al kinds of weather in his truck as his "protection piece".
The shop is asking $599 for it.
I know, it's a Python, they'll never make them again. Is it worth it?

Honestly, it's getting tough to find a Python, any Python in any shape that functions properly for less that $700 let alone less than $600.
It's tough for me to say with-out actually seeing pictures.
Reading your description sounds bad, but I bet it doesn't look that aweful.
You think they would take less if you tossed the cash at them ?

Refinished, and heavily used Pythons are not horribly pricey comparatively speaking and I think well worth it if you can find one for less than 600.

Is it worth it?

Depends entirely upon you. Are you looking for a shooter that you're going to carry around on your farm a few days a week? That's a fine piece for that job at a reasonable price.

But do you have the heart of a collector who doesn't shoot much but likes to fondle your firearms investment? Because if you're the latter, I'd recommend you spend a few hundred more and buy a more pristine Python.

And lest you think that someday you can have it refinished, Pythons can be tricky about that. I don't know why, but sometimes some of the parts come out of the salts with a distinctive purple color.

It's best to wait and find just what you want.

I've been through this same discussion with Pythons and Diamondbacks both. It all comes down to what you want. Do you want the Python for its beauty or do you want it for it's precision parts, accuracy, and trigger? If you want a looker then you might want to pass on this one. If you want a Python to shoot and enjoy, then it sounds like a great to pick up. These are questions that none of us can answer for you. If it were me, I'd pick it up anyway. Better to have too many Pythons than none at all.

It may not be the prettiest girl on the block, but it will sure perform like a professional! :D
