Crimson Trace makes lasers for the "second generation" steel Kahrs. What's "second generation" mean in terms of a K40?

Some early kahrs had a different grip. I believe all the K-40 guns take the new grips. IIRC the guns affected had a serial # that began with GA.
I'd call kahr with your serial # just to be sure....they sell the crimson trace so they'll be able to tell you what fits your gun.
