Quail on my property.

I believe the single worst predictor on wildlife are cats that roam. Wild predator s usually only kill what they need to eat. Cats kill anything that moves.

Actually, coyotes help, not hurt wild bird populations. Sounds goofy at first, but coyotes usually can’t catch birds. Too big, too slow. But coyotes can catch the animals that catch birds. Cats and foxes.

I am speaking from a chicken perspective but for me Coyotes are the #1 killer more than a half dozen were awarded the Darwin Award before they started getting less lethal food. Then “wild” dogs get 2nd place, like cats they didn’t kill for food, just for fun, feathers everywhere and dead chickens in the yard, Coyotes don’t do that. #3 is hawks but they only go after the little ones.

When I was a kid I always heard the bobwhite quail, in the fence rows/overgrowth. Fire ants were the change I noticed more than anything else.

You knock out cover and you’ll see rabbits have problems but bring it back and they are back.

Only thing that doesn’t fit that thought is the fact that chaparral birds have been fine despite being ground nesting birds too.
Fire ants affect anything that depends on insects to survive. Why? Because fire ants decimate our native insects and they are no longer available for other animals like quail, horned lizards, snakes, turkey and anything else that depends on them for part or all of their food supply. Most folks only think about the direct impact of fire ants but miss this most important indirect impact that has altered entire ecosystems.

We used to have Quail here when I was up into my early 20s.
We even hunted them & were very good at it.
My Dad raised them for years until dogs got in on them & killed them all.
Now there are so many loose family cats & free roaming dogs I haven't heard a quail
for around 35 years.
People & their pets make me sick when they aren't responsible owners.

This evening while I was chiselling the winter pasture/ food plot, I got to watch two quail running around eating bugs that I unearthed.
My little mountain Feist wanted to chase them, but I called her off.

Interesting study...https://newsok.com/article/2587470/...-hawks-owls-are-greatest-threats-to-bobwhites
Hunting accounts for only 15 percent of Oklahoma's quail deaths. - Feeders did not increase bobwhite survival. - Feeders did not increase bobwhite population numbers. - Hawk and owl predation was higher on the portion of the study area that contained feeders. - Hawk and owl predation was the highest cause of quail mortality (40 percent), followed by animal predation (26 percent) and hunting (15 percent). - None of the mortalities over the five-year study were determined to be the direct result of diseases. - Almost 24 percent of male bobwhites incubated nests. - Five to 35 percent of bobwhite broods were raised by males annually. - Around 24 percent of female bobwhites attempted second nests. - The average brood-rearing period for chicks is 39 days. - Bobwhite chick survival from hatching to 39 days was 37 percent.

It's been raining all day. When I get home, 8 quail spooked at the end of the driveway. We are on the way to a huntable population.

All raptors, including falcons and eagles, humans, but the biggest killer here in the south is pesticides and habitat loss
