I feel like I should know the answer to this but I will have to admit I am more of a collector of cool guns than a shooter of cool guns.

I came across a 1950 336 in probably 95% condition. I went out at the beginning of deer season to sight it in, thinking it would be a fun alternative to my standard killing rifle. Loaded, chambered, uhmmm. I can see the back right side of the cartridge. Upon closer inspection it looked like a very tiny piece of metal may or may not have sheered off. Couldnt tell. It could have just needed to be polished.

I went to a gun shop and they had an oldie in .35 Remington that looked like, if loaded, it would be exactly the same.

So the question I have for the board is- On older 336s is it OK if I can see the back right edge of the chambered cartridge?

Thanks

Without pics, I can not fathom what you are seeing, but...

The answer is no...

You should not be able to see any part of the cartridge with the bolt completely closed...

You sure you are not looking in the loading gate?

In this instance, a picture would be invaluable.

But if another Marlin lever gun appeared to have the same "problem," then I'm going with Salmoneye.

Unless the OP is trolling us.

We are going to need pictures.

However, the Marlin action is designed to spill gas from a blown case head out the loading port opening. Maybe your opening has a lot of clearance.

See it? Is that right?

Hmm...

The only 336 I have handy is in .35 Rem, and it does not show the amount of brass your gun does...

There is some brass visible with a bright light and holding the gun at the correct angle...

If it were me, I'd post the pics at MarlinOwners.com, and ask the question there...

I chambered a empty, sized, 30-30 case in my Marlin 30AS,and couldn't see any brass. hdbiker

Yea it does seem like quite a lot of brass.

I will try that Marlin Owners site.

Thanks

Wondering if you had an update?

I took your pic into PhotoShop and enlarged it to see uf I could figure out what is/was going on...

By comparing to other 336's, it sure looks to me as if your bolt is not closed...

The end of the extractor should not be visible...

Maybe check for a separated case head stuck in the chamber? If the lever closes harder with a round than it does without, just might be the problem.
