Hey guys, quick question. I've been helping an old friend move for a few weeks (warehouse) and we came across a few guns he bought a long time ago to tinker with. One of them is a well-worn (finish wise) H&R top break in .38 S&W. He told me I could keep it since he didn't want to mess with it.

Basically, function wise, here's how it breaks down (ha, pun). Top half is just fine. Ejector spring feels a little weak, but who cares.

The bottom half, heh...

I could go on and on explaining the symptoms, but this is the problem: there is no tension (in the direction of the muzzle) on the lever. So the lever flops around forward and backwards. I took the top half off so I'm just messing with the bottom half now. I can't find a schematic of the gun, so I'm just slowly taking it apart to figure out how it works--it's fairly basic. I just do not know what I need to apply tension to that part. It looks like if there was tension there, the double action would lock up and so would the single action. As it sits right now, the lever works sometimes and doesn't work sometimes. So the cylinder doesn't lock unless it works (obviously).

The other thing is that when I pull the hammer back, the trigger doesn't always go into single action. I think it all boils down to the lever. Like I said, though, I don't know what needs replacing or repair.

This is just a fun project for me. I want to make it function and then I'm going to refinish it (likely strip the remaining nickle and then hot blue it). It won't be fired until my smith clears it.

Ideas?

Oh, the SN is thus: 1124xx

Got an old one a few years ago. The hammer would not cock in single action mode. My solution was the dishwasher followed by Rem Oil spray. Has worked great ever since.

I have one. Still shoots pretty well. Someone scuffed up one side of the barrel. I like the .38 S&W cartridge.
