Question about a Redding Model #1 Beam Scale

I purchased a Redding Model #1 scale on Ebay for a friend. The scale is ok. Looks new. It came in the original box but no manual. This is a very simple beam scale. I put it together and the scale zeros ok. Hanging below the pivot points is a paddle shaped device that hangs down into a small reservoir. I assume one fills the resevoir with either water or light oil and this is how the beam is dampened. I tried it with water and oil. The light oil works best. Anyone have any experience with this scale? I called Redding for information and they are shut down for two weeks. Redding's online catalog does not show a Model #1 in their product line. They show a Model #2, but it looks like it is magnetic dampened.

It is oil dampened, and they have been obsolete for many years since magnetic dampening became available..

Big mess when the oil creeps out and collects dust all over everything.

I gave up on them 40 years ago.

Question about a Redding Model #1

Thanks RC. I suspected that this was a discontinued model. I only gave $9.50 for the scale. Freight cost more than the scale. The friend that I purchased this for is just getting into reloading. He is on a pretty tight budget but I think it will be fine to start out with.

I've been using my vintage NOS #1 without oil or water. Very accurate. I like it a lot.

I bought a Redding #1 balance two years ago both as a lark and a 2nd back up for my electronic balance. Light motor oil seems to work well for damping. BTW, I was able to print out a manual from Redding's website.

I have a Webster & use it alot !



Since this pic I`ve replaced the med bottle with a glasspaint bottle for miniture airbrushes, but found synthetic power steering fluid won`t creep or change viscosity in temp swings.

Really good scales if ya leave em in 1 place & don`t spill the oil.



As long as the paddle is 1/4" in the oil you`re ok & man alive these things will weigh dust !!

& by the way I paid 26 bucks for mine & I snuck outta there like I made out like a bandit !!!
