Ok this may be the wrong forum, but i figured questions about concealed carry of one weapon is as good as another.

A guy on another board i post on was coming back from cananda into PA. In canada he bought some brass knuckles, just for the hell of it i guess. US customs found them in his backpack and he 'got cited for Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree'. Waiting for more info, thats all i got so far.

I'm wondering what the laws are in NY. I thought these things were legal to own most places, but illegal to carry. Couldnt this be considered transporting (since thats all he was doing actually)?

"Most places" usually does not apply to New York.

I'd bet its like fireworks in my area. They are legal to purchase, but not legal own. Go figure?

Hope it works out for your friend.

Most states won't let you carry them, so they are strictly for "laughs."

From the NYS Penal Law definitions page. "Deadly Weapon" means any loaded firearm from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or other serious injury may be discharged or a switchblade knife, gravity knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal knuckle knife, dagger, billy, blackjack, or metal knuckles.

With the exception of the loaded firearm which is a felony, the others were misdemeanors. Jail time up to one year. A "skid bit".

Now of course that`s just for possession. Use would then be a felony.

I see it hasn`t changed much since I was in the academy with the exceptions of the elimination of the word "dirk" and the addition of "pilum ballistic knife".

That is one nice thing about Ky, our permit is a CCDW (Concealed Carry Deadly Weapon). If for some reason I felt the need to drag a set of those around with me it wouldn't be against the law. Essentially if you can get it under your coat then anything goes.

Yeah thats what he said, max of one year. So i guess its illegal to possess all that stuff there? Sounds more like stuff you cant carry but i guess in their opinion he was carrying it anyway. Not much left but tell him to get a lawyer i guess. Thanks.

Do you know for sure he was charged with violating New York law? Customs has their own regulations for importation of weapons, which are often stricter than state laws. For example, last time I checked, airsoft guns are legal to own most everywhere but illegal to import (unless certain conditions are met). Same thing for balisongs, a.k.a. butterfly knives.

Ok he just said they were bought in PA, sorry bout that. He had them in his backpack, in the trunk of the car, during the trip (forgot they were there). They found them on the way back in so he was arrested in NY.
