Forgive me if this has been asked before, I can imagine it probably has. I did search about and cant find exactly what im looking for. Forgive me if this is in the wrong section.

I hope I can make this come out right. Im wondering about where is the appropriate hammer position position while CCing.

Cocked and safety on? hammer down safety on?

Cocked safety off? or hammer down safety off?

I have always been trained that my finger is the ultimate safety, but this has been on my mind for some time now. I dont know why. I know everyone probably has their own opinions but would just like to know if there is a "official" carry practice.

Forgive me if this is not an approptiate question, but everyone I seem to talk to just has the "whatever you want" answer. :scrutiny: Heck maybe I should just stop thinking so much.

Well... It depends on what kind of handgun you're talking about... (I'm going to assume you're carrying with a round in the chamber)

If it's a 1911, cocked and locked is the best (only) option. I would never recommend carrying cocked with safety off.

If it's an HK in the typical set up, you can carry that cocked and locked, decocked and no safety, or decocked with a safety. I would never recommend carrying cocked with safety off.

If it's a SIG or something of that set up, I would carry decocked. I would never recommend carrying cocked with safety off (I can't say that enough).

It depends entirely upon your gun and personal preference.

1911's, cocked and locked with the safety on is the general consensus.

A DA/SA with an external hammer such as a Beretta 92 or Taurus PT92, hammer down on a loaded chamber either with or without the safety on would be the majority.

I carry a PT-145 with an internal hammer and no method of decocking, so I carry it cocked and locked with the safety off - even the single action trigger has such a heavy pull that I don't worry about it.

It depends on a lot of factors.

With DA first shot pistols, the hammer is always down for, not surprisingly, a DA first shot. Some have manual safeties, others do not. If you choose one with a manual safety and you wish to leave it engaged, you must practice with it so its operation becomes natural and subconscious.

I have a couple of these, a P64 and a CZ-82. I carry them both hammer down, safety off.
The safety on the CZ-82 cannot be engaged with the hammer down. The P64 has a hammer drop safety like the Walther PPK, you engage the safety and the hammer drops. I carry that with the safety off because I'm a lefty and I figure a 20lb DA trigger is a good enough safety. Both pistols have a hammer block safety.
