Are all real Colt 1911 factory magazines marked on the floor plate with the Colt pony? I have a chance to buy 23 1911 magazines which I am told are original factory Colt magazines but the floor plate is marked COLT 45 AUTO without the Colt pony. Is this the real factory mag or are they fake? BTW these are blued 8 round mags and are for sale at a gunshop near me for $15 each. Could be a good deal on factory mag or ripoff with fakes.

Fake.

All genuine Colt factory magazines have the Colt Pony, and a code letter indicating the sub-contractor who actually made it.

You can't beat McCormick PowerMags!!!

For $19 each, you can get Chip McCormick PowerMags at www.midwayusa.com (item #783-573).

These are 8 round stainless steel mags with stainless followers, base pads and sight holes for each round. My McCormick PowerMags have been 100% reliable in functioning and are equal to the vaunted Wilson Combat #47D magazine, IMHO and cost less.

I call fake.

Words well spoken. I have several and they are fantastic.

BTW, you should also acquire some Metalform standard 7-round magazines if yours is pretty much a stock pistol. No base pad, and the flat follower with dimple, plain Metalforms. Just to keep yourself earthbound. :)

I have 2 mags that I got w/ my 1991 & XSE respectively and both have the pony...so, in my VERY VERY VERY limited experience, no pony, no Colt :D

I had to think twice about it, and finally had to dig it out to look at it,
but the original factory mag that came with my '70 Series Gov.
Model .45 does not have a "Pony" on it.
Maybe the newer models have the "Pony", but this old Colt, built in 1971,
came without it, on the magazine, at least. It does have the Colt Pony
on the slide.

Not necessarily fake - The older Colt 45s had them marked COLT 45 AUTO just as the ones you were shown. I have a brace of factory Colts from 1970 that have exactly those mags, so they can be factory.

The newer mags do come with the Rampant Colt logo (Pony trademark). :)

See Walter' s post above for a pic of a factory Colt mag marked as mine are.

Midway. SW1911 magazines on clearance for $25.99. These are really Wilson Combat magazines.
Midway. Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazines for $14.29
I've had good luck with these.

There are so many counterfeit Colt magazines, some with the exact markings, including the pony, that I require a new Colt 1911 to come with the Colt "factory" magazine to prove it's authenticity. To be honest, as much of a Colt 1911 buff as I am, I do not know the difference, and I don't think it can be truly ascertained by markings. The Chinese do not have to follow our counterfeit laws.
