I was watching Shooting USA on The Outdoor Channel last night. They were talking about the M1 Garand matches where ten shot groups are fired on targets 200 yards away. I think they said it was prone, sitting, and standing.

I didn't see any targets though. The Garands were, of course, being fired with only iron sights. Each shooter had a spotter.

What kind of groups are they getting at 200 yards prone? How big is the ten ring on those targets?

I'm happy with 1 1/2" groups @ 100 yards with my scoped .30-06 bolt action but I sure don't know how well I'd do with iron sights at 200 yards, let alone standing.

you would be amazed.

ive seen 5 shot groups at 100 that just look like one ragged hole.

its amazing how accurate the rifles are but whats even more amazing is how good some of those competitors are.

keep an eye on the august ar15/garand match stickied at the top of the forum. it doesnt include standing at those ranges but will give some clues about how accurate they can be.

The SR-C (SR-1?) target is the nra standard for 200 yards. Ten ring is about 7".

If you can keep 90% of them in the ten or X (in all positions) you are doing great.

That was likely the CMP John C. Garand match series. They're being held EVERYWHERE and 'The John C. Garand Match is the CMP's most popular CMP Games event held during the National Matches. The course of fire is 15 shots slow-fire prone (first 5 shots are sighters); 10 shots rapid-fire prone; 10 shots slow fire standing. All shot from 200 yards.'
