I'm planning a revolver build. At present it looks like it's going to start as a stock, 3" 686p that will go back to Smith for some work (master trigger job and bead blasting mostly).

I'm trying to decide whether to have it cut for moon clips. But here's my question. Once a gun has been cut for moon clips can it than also be used without them? Or must one always use moon clips once that's been done.

Thanks,

Ben

I was looking into the same thing myself, except with a Ruger GP161. I am pretty sure that Clark Customs moon clip cut can be used with single round loading. I also recall the same from some other companies.

I suspect the when the cylinder is cut for moonies, when you try to load without them, they would sit too far from the firing pin. Just a thought but there are others more knowledge about this than I, so I guess I should try it on my M22

Yeah, but if you look at a moon clip it doesn't completely encircle the case, only maybe 2/3's of it. So it would seem logical that when they machine out a cylinder to accept moon clips that the outside portion of the cylinder would be left intact? So the outside might still support the rim. If that's the case is that support enough to work without moon clips?

In other words, if I find myself with a handfull of shells but no clips would I still be able to shoot them?
