I just purchased a new Glock 19 with intent to use it as a concealed carry piece. The first thing I did was detail strip it using internet instructions. My question is in regards to the three pins in the frame.

On my Springfield XD's, I know that the pin holes in the plastic frame are reinforced by small metal rings in order to never become loose (this was demonstrated on the AGI armorer's course DVD).

Are the Glock pin holes also reinforced or not? I ask this because I'm anal about keeping my guns clean. I usually detail strip my autos quite often. However, I am worried that without reinforcement, removing the pins often enough will loosen the holes.

I would have asked this on Glocktalk, but apparently I am already banned without having ever been a member (I emailed but no response yet.)

Thanks!

Reinforced by hard polymer. In addition, as long as you remove them from left to right and replace right to left, to prevent stripping (in my opinion).

The slide stop lever spring is wrapped around the trigger pin and touching the locking block pin. The spring may be a reinforcement.

Reinforcement? Glocks don't need no stinking reinforcement!
Sorry, could not resist.
But yeah, what the count said.

There is absolutely no reason to detail a Glock more than once a year, irregardless of how many rounds you shoot. I don't see a problem in detailing the slide, but not the frame. The frame pin holes will widen over time if you choose to detail the pistol every week, month or day.

Let us know what happens with that. I used to post there and now show up as "banned". I thought it may have been because I made the bully cop with the old wino avatar cry, but it might be because they're technically screwed up.

I've got to agree with gtmtnbiker98.
No need to detail strip the pistol that often.

No metal reinforcement.

I've detail stripped my Glock hundreds of times, however, and the holes haven't loosened at all. I push the pins out from left to right, then put the big one in from right to left, and the smaller two from left to right.

I detail strip any weapon (including my G27) I carry for protection quite a bit more than once a year just to inspect the parts. My guess is that Glock would probably make right any frame that the pins became loose due to wear caused from correctly removing the pins.

I haven't detail stripped my G19 at all. It has about 2000rds through it. I might detail strip it at 5000 or so. IMO you don't need to detail strip it unless you start to have problems or are replacing or inspecting parts.

When it comes to cleaning Glocks aren't for anal people, they're for lazy people, like me. I don't bother to clean my guns regularly. If you're cleaning your Glock every week, you're basically doing unnecessary work.

yup

these high pressure non cholorinated brake cleaner sprays that you can buy at NAPA for about $2.50 will clean any damn part in that glock without taking them all the way down. Just make sure you re-oil or respray oil as those clenaers clean to the point of total dryness, but they are super cleaners and will not harm the gun. Gun scrubbeer is the same stuff only 4 times as expensive as the auto stuff. I have 15,000 rounds through my kahr PM9 and I have done no more than pressure clean it and lube it and never a failure yet. My G19 gets the same treatment. For me when i details strip, I sometimes tend to loose those damn small parts...

Glock pistols for CC/protection...

If you want to carry or use a Glock model, I'd suggest going to a Glock trained gunsmith and have them put in a NY-01 trigger. This was designed by the NY State Police for issue Glock models. The NY-01 trigger will provide a smooth even trigger pull. Massad Ayoob, www.ayoob.com , suggests this custom feature for Glock carry pistols.

I shoot Glocks in competition and run 5000-6000 rounds a year through them. The only time I detail strip is to replace a broken or worn trigger or striker spring or if the trigger pull starts feeling gritty (usually means it's time to clean the connector and trigger bar.) That's once or twice a year, if that. I've never had a pin come loose on my guns, but I've seen it happen on one friend's gun. Sometimes if the main trigger pin backs out it means you didn't get the slide lock engaged in the groove in the pin. Other wise if a pin backs out, you can 1) send the gun to Glock to be dealt with, 2) put a little clear nail polish on the right side of a pin to add some material to help keep it in, 3) peen the right side of a pin a bit. Use the Glock tool for removing pins, left to right, replace right to left. I could see maybe the wrong size punch or not pushing straight out messing things up. If you're taking the thing apart regularly, you need to be less anal. It's a Glock after all!

Thanks for all the info. I already detail stripped once when I bought it and I'll probably do it again after I take it to the range the first time out (just to learn the process by heart). After that, I'll try to be less anal and strip it only when it really needs it.
It will be hard because my dad always taught me to clean and oil guns regularly to avoid rust, etc. That lesson still sticks to the point that I even detail strip my AK's after every range session.
