I was given an unopened "new" 1lb container of Winchester Ball Powder #748 and along with it were 2 boxes of 165 gr GR SST bullets. The problem is when I went to the Winchester load data site it shows two different loads for the 748.
A: 150 gr HDY RN .308 cal 44.0 gr
B: 170 gr HDY FP .308 cal 41.2 gr
I figure the amount is somewhere in between the two but have no idea where. To complicate matters I found out Hodgdon bought out the Winchester powder so I can't find the recommended load for 165 GR SST using the Winchester 748, nor can I find a book for the Winchester specific powder. I'm guessing Hodgdon pulled them.
Would anyone know or have the correct load info for 165 GR SST using the 748 powder?

It's for my AR10 and I'm trying to stay within the recommended load.

It would be nice if you included the cartridge you are loading for. I could guess.

You're not serious are you? Why in the hell would Hodgdon pull manuals for one of Their product lines?

What loading manuals do you have on hand now?

Neither Hornady #4 or #6 manuals, or Winchester, or Hodgdon has listed WW-748 with the .30 165 gr. SST in .308 Winchester caliber.

They didn't pull it, because it wasn't there to start with.

They do show some loaded with WW-760 however.

Have ou tried Hodgdon.com? They have a lot info on their.

I will look in my Sierra manual when I get home tonight.

No need to do that look on this page http://www.6mmbr.com/308Win.html and you will find the data your looking for. Hope this helps. Oh yah Look for the Sierra Load map. It is about 1/4 of the way down the page.

I looked in my Speer 13 Manual with the same results. My Nosler 5th edition only shows it used for the 125 gr in .308. The load they show is 47.5 - 51.5.
I suspect 748 is too fast for what you are trying to do.

Best I could suggest is to send the W748 to me so I can use it loading my .223 :p

.

Lyman No 47 and Hodgdon 26 have data for Win 748 and a 165 gr bullet. I don't guarantee the brand but that is what the fine print about "starting loads" and "working up" is about.

Thanks,
found it on Speer, page 5: 40.8 @ 2500 and 42.1 @ 2600. I did go to the Hodgdon site,(have their book as well). It only shows the 760. I followed the Winchester link and that's what I quoted above.

Steve4120: It's for a .308 winchester. Yes, I am serious, All sorts of stuff availble for Hodgdon, nothing on Winchester powder. Haven't bought any, except the ABC of reloading. I do have 6 checked out from the public library tho.

rcmodel. I found the 760 powder as well.

Check the link listed by cpttango30. click on the "Speer" box You'll find it on page five.
I'll be happy to send it to you. Just pay the 150.00 shipping and it's yours. :)

Jim: I'm going to start with 40.8 less 10% then work my way up to 40.8. I figure somewhere between 40.8 and 42.1 should work pretty well. I'm probably going to try 5, 5, 5, and 5. all at 300yds

Well I am not seeing the Speer link, But I do see a listing for it on the Sierra link. So, best of luck to you.

I knew there was a reason I don't mail-order powder :neener:

My fault, It's Sierra. :uhoh:

Nothing on Win? Interesting, I see Hodgdon has data for the only two Win powders that fit into the burn rate for the 308 Win, 760 and 748. What more do you want?
Steve the two loads I found on Hodgdon I listed in my original post. Neither fit what I am trying to reload.
What I did find on the Sierra load page was the closest match I could find for the powder/bullet combination I have and want to try.
The AR10B I have is one of the 50th annv target barrel and I want to move away from the factory loads to my own. I think you have to match the ammunition with the rifle. I did it with my 7.62x39mm CZ527 and think it can be done with the AR10. The only difference is I cannot mount a scope on the AR.
