So my friend lives in Delaware and his uncle lives in Maryland, his uncle is thinking about gifting him a handgun from his collection. Can his uncle simply gift him the gun similar to a private sale? Or dose he need to go through an FFL since they are in different states?

Here are the only legal ways (under federal law) a handgun can change possession from a resident of one state who is not an FFL to a resident of a different state who is also not an FFL.

1. The transfer can take place through an FFL doing business in the state of residence of the person receiving the handgun.

OR

2. The person owning the handgun can die and bequeath it to the other person.

State laws may impose additional restrictions.

^^ I'd go with Option #1.

Yes, it requires your friend take possession of the gun from an FFL located in Maryland. Make sure he is also aware of any Maryland laws by which he'll need to abide when it comes to acquiring and possession of a handgun. That state is a tricky one.

This right here.

According to the facts in the OP, the proposed recipient of the gun lives in Delaware. Therefore, we're talking about a Delaware FFL.

Pretty sure that, since it's a handgun, it has to go to a DE FFL first, then to a MD FFL.
Now, that's the Federal side.
I have this memory that MD has additional hoops for handguns as well as firearms in general.
This is pertinent to OP as the Federal rules are predicated on the transfer being legal in the recipient's State per that State's law.
But, I could be misremembering this.

.
Might want to reread the OP.;)

The uncle who lives in MD, just delivers the firearm to a DE dealer, who transfers to the nephew.
