I currently own a Sig P220 that I'm looking to sell in California. I bought it years ago when I was posted on Ft. Knox, KY. and took it with me when I got out of the Army and came back home. I'm looking to trade it in for a more economical gun, since .45 ACP is hella expensive around here. Unfortunately, all the paperwork associated with it was destroyed by water. I have since stopped storing important documents in cardboard boxes. So I now have a gun without any proof of ownership. How do I go about selling it?

I don't think you need proof of ownership to sell it. Like your lawn mower, guns aren't titled. But unlike your lawn mower, you will need the services of a dealer to sell it, even to your neighbor in a "face to face" transaction. Such is California.

CA laws requires all firearm transfers, except for intra-familial gifts and transfers of long guns 50+ years old, to be done through a CA FFL dealer.

So, you & the buyer meet at a CA FFL dealer and perform a PPT (Private Party Transfer). You do not have to prove ownership, you do have to provide a CA DL/ID. During the transfer process, you will be recorded as the former owner.

In CA, a PPT is a private party transfer of a firearm between two CA residents facilitated by a CA FFL dealer.

Basically yes. The Sig P220 is on the California Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale which matters to the dealer if he is going to take it into his inventory for sale. It wouldn't matter for a PPT to another California resident.

You would get a lot more for the firearm selling it to another private party. The dealer is going to give you as little as he can get away with on a trade.

If you are selling it and live in CA you need all the good ID etc...

If you left Army in good standing, offer it to others for sale. You will be beat up if going to a dealer to sell...But all paperwork is important...You brought a handgun into CA with out paper work

Might want to contact DOJ... Calguns.net might be a good location to ask question...

So, if CA is so bad, why did you come back here:what: The Army is one star so is TX and other countries;)

Regards

I didn't bring it into CA without paperwork, the paperwork was destroyed. I was helping to clean out the garage where I kept it, and placed the box it was in out in the side yard. I forgot to bring it back in when we were done, and it got rained on God knows how many times before I noticed the box and realized what was in it.

I would like to sell it to another person, but after a month of asking around, I don't have any takers.

I'm not worried about getting shafted by a dealer, either. I know what my Sig is worth, and if the dough don't show, then I always have the option of walking.

I came back to Kali because firearms laws weren't on my list of "make or break" considerations in 2007, though the legal climate is becoming more and more a factor in my decision of whether or not to stay here. When my four years were up, I was more concerned with proximity to friends, family, a familiar environment, and the company that offered me a job before I even received my ETS paperwork.

I don't see any posts for selling the P220 at this location...

How much are you asking??? What do you want to trade if anything:confused:

Regards

You're not asking in the right places. There is an active market in CA for a Germany made, folded slide 220...even one with a stainless slide should draw some interest.

If you sell it FTF, the dealer is limited to charging a $35 fee ($10 for him, $25 for the DROS), if you have to send it to another FFL, the sky is the limit as to what they charge

Go to calguns.net, there is a very active private sales subforum there. Selling guns is easy here.

I noticed you got a bite right away. that is a better than good price, it is what I paid for each of my two CPO 220STs about a year ago

Yeah, I priced it to move. It's not about a trade-in anymore. As of this afternoon, my car needs a new intake manifold gasket, and I'm a wee bit short on cash. I really want to foot the bill without having to put it on a credit card.
