Question about the Smith & Wesson 39-2

I have a bit of experience with the 39. My agency was the first large agency to issue the 39/39-2. We made several modifications to the 39 which eventually lead to the 39-2. I posted a thread on Glocktalk on field stripping a 5904.

Your 39-2 is the same way.
There have been other recent threads on the 39. Do a search for a bit of history on it. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=189577

M39

The M39 does not field strip the same way as the 59xx serise IIRC.

If you post a request on the Smith & Wesson Forum there is a member there who has scanned S&W instruction sheets he is very good about sharing. He emailed me one for an M52 a few days ago.

Ask there and you will get what you need.

The only difference between the 39 take down and the 59XX is the 39 has a removeable barrel bushing. He will see how it removes once he pulls the slide and removes the recoil spring and guide rod, which removes identical to the 59XX. Other than that the take down is identical to the 2nd and 3rd gen S&Ws.
For over 27 yrs I carried everyday as issued 39, 469, 459, 6904, 5904, 6904, 645, and 457. I've run many thousands of rds thru them, used them hard, and they've saved my bacon on more than one occasion. Other than the bushing they all field strip the same way.

The barrel bushing is the only added pice to remove which is just a 90 degree turn and pop it out. Easy to do and otherwise it is just like any other 3rd gen pistol to field strip but take an extra 15 seconds. :D

Thanks for the help everyone. I haven't cleaned it yet, but it shoot pretty good today. 100 mixed FMJ, and HP rounds and no failures. Seemed to hit where it was pointed if I did my part.

Mine is a 39-nothing. Trigger has been slicked and hard to say how many thousands of rds have been thru it. It was one of the original issued from 1968. Don't know who the Troop was before me who had it. Knowing about how many rds I've put thru it and figuring if the Troop before me just shot minimal qualification shoots mine would have over 15,000 rds thru it of just duty ammo. It still shoots almost as good as the Model 52 I had.
Everyone should own a 39. They're a classic. Enjoy!
