How well does your rifle group and did you have to do anything to get it to group well?

I'd like to get one of these and am all but set on doing it, with one exception, everyone seems to talk of their inaccurateness.

I wouldn't say its inaccurate. Just not as accurate as my Enfield. Its got some decent kick as well. My shoulder is bruised everytime I shoot it.

You're supposed to aim with these things? I thought it just made a huge BWOOOM sound and that was it... I can hit a milk-jug-o-water most times at 50 yards.

Well... mine broke something on Sunday, so I only put about 150 rounds through it so far... still worth every penny!

I get 2" - 3" MOA with cheap surplus ammo. You know, the brown paper wrapped junk. But I chopped the whole barrel down to about 17". I just chopped right behind the bayonet lug. This seemed to change the barrel harmonics immensely.

It is/was a pseudo scout project I have been working on and off on. I still want to handload some ammo and see what it is actually capable of doing.

I think a lot of it is the trigger. There is a reworked trigger available (just run a search for MN trigger) and when you combine that with the sights, that pretty much stacks the deck against any sharpshooting with them.

One of these days I'm going to invest in a set of MOJO's for mine.

You didn't do badly with it Friday, though. Not bad at all. Just keep in mind that for under $100, it ain't no Accuracy International.

Rabbit.

Oh C'mon Rabbit........it's a SNIPER rifle. I have my "covert sniper" I.D. card to prove it.

Nah, it has to have a 30 inch barrel to be a sniper rifle.

You're just mad I didn't bring my 1896 Swede :D To make you madder, I gave MORE money for my last M44 than I did my first Swede.

hurdygurdyborkborkbork!

See ya.
Rabbit.

With Wolf ammo, I got 3.5 inch at 100 yards with my M38. The 1942 91/30 wasn't grouping as well, more like 4 inches at 100 yards with Czech Silvertip surplus. the Czech is the most accurate of the surplus, and darn cheap - AIM ran a special of $49.95 a case of 780 for a while.
Albanian is nice brass cased ammo, but inconsistant accuracy and preformance. The light ball, (147gr) is rifle ammo, while the heavy ball (174 and up) is usually delinked machine guns ammo.
The nice thing is surplus is still being made, as the round in still in service in Russia and in former Soviet satellite nations.
Buy an M44 from Aztec for 69.95 shipped, and you can't go wrong....

"Minute of pie-plate" @100Yds with the cheap Albanian surplus ammo [$3.50/20]

And bayo folded vs. extended does make a bout a 3" windage change.

With good ammo I can do 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards with my brother's M44.

As for the bayonet, it changes the harmonics. I don't understand that myself but somehow the added weight on the barrel causes it to vibrate differently. Or so I am told.

I'm not a physics or metallurgy guy, but as I understand it, has to do with harmonics & horizontal barrel whip when fired. IS sometimes ammo-sensitive, too.The bayo on the M-44's pulls out, flips around, and an extra ring slips over the muzzle.

Sort of like shortening the barell on most of the Ruger mini-14's and adding a flash reducer changes the harmonics/whip on them, increasing accuracy.

Alduro found out about that firsthand. He was shooting a nice tightish group about 3 inches left of center before I suggested he fold out the bayonet, which brought it to the ten ring.

Rabbit.

Yeah, that's why I cut mine. Bayo mount and all. I figured a shorter stiffer barrel should be more accurate. Which it is.

I am thinking if I handload mine I should be able to get 1.5" - 2" MOA. It certainly is a capable rifle. Well, for the first five shots.

I can see how if you have a 100 gabillion charging mad Ivans coming at you with these it's a formidable war machine. But the one thing I hate about this gun is reloading.

I don't know Alduro. I'm torn (torn I tell you!!), in the long run I wish I had found another Lee Enfield and bubba'ed it. But they seem to have dried up around here, and this one was not a safe queen. (Plus I got it free) I think I would have to recommend looking into an Enfield in .308 though. Sorry I know this is more info than you asked for.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Harmonics and stabalizing the barrel aside, I noticed that when the bayonett was extended, it PULLED the barrel to the right....I think because of the way the ring will actually move the barrel on the bayonet.

I've had over a dozen M44's in the past few years, they grouped from "better than they should", to "I wonder which county that one hit in". My favorite is my Hungarian that will shoot 1.5" groups with just about every surplus ammo I've fed it. Most I've had will shoot at least 3 inch groups which is good enough for most folks.

I had a "brand new" one

re-arsenalled then never issued, so the barrel and crown were pristine...With cheapo surplus accuracy was lousy, with Czech Silvertip surplus it was much better...With commercial (S&B) ammo it was quite accurate, 1" or better at 50 yards, and alot of that was I have difficulties with open sights (vision problems-old age!)...So they can be pretty accurate...A guy we see at the range (seems to always shoot when we do) has a 91/30 with a scope which will routinely shoot 1" or less at 100 yards.
