My son picked up a Nova, and I put a couple of rounds through it at a pattern board.

Unless I was pulling on the forearm without thinking about it, it was unlocking, and the bolt was almost to the rear after each shot and it didn't have to go back much further to eject the empty.

Is that normal?

Normal for a good pump action. Mine does it also. A good pump action almost ejects the empty. It is designed that way.

Well, they all ought to do that, at least if they're light enough, or shot with heavy enough loads. When your shoulder stops the gun from recoiling further, the pump assembly is going to keep moving backwards until something stops it. The reason Winchester 1300s seem to do it more is probably that they are
so light.
