I just purchased a 3" barrel for my model 29-2 that currently has a 6" barrel. I bought it on gunbroker but haven't got it in yet.

Do I also need to buy a shorter ejection rod and different locking bolt? I have read that perhaps I may have to.

Thanks for any help.

The ejection rod is shorter on the 3" N frames. The shroud is shorter, so the longer one won't fit in. A competent gunsmith could alter it downward, but it's cheap to just buy a new one; they are not pricey.

It appears the locking bolt is different. The length appears compatible, but the cross-pin placement is different. The 3" barrels I have and the 3.5" one differ in how far the pin is set forward from the shroud recess. The shorter barrel has it placed closer to the cut-out (closer to the cylinder, relatively speaking). The new barrel, if it's a take-off, will likely have it still installed (most take-offs do, but no guarantee). If it's an overrun from the Lew Horton guns last year or 2008, then it probably doesn't.

I'm not a "smith" but I have a S&W 65 with a 3" barrel and the rod is the same as for the 4" barrel. I don't believe you will need to change the ejector rod. If it were a 2 1/2" barrel my answer would probably be different.

Thanks ORO. I had one of those strange moments and forgot the difference in frame sizes.

Yes, exactly. With the K's, the rod size changes between 2.5" (short) and 3" (regular). With N's, it is 3" and 3.5" respectively.

The barrel is from Numrich and is supposed to be new without a locking bolt, spring or pin.
I ordered the spring and pin but they didn't have the locking bolt for a 3" barrel as is what perked my curiousity as to the fact they might be different from other length barrels.

Does anyone know where I might find a locking bolt and ejector rod for a 3" N framed barrel?

Thanks Oro for the info.
