Question for Tree Squirrel Hunters

I have never hunted grey squirrels (one of the more common tree squirrels in California) but might want to some day (I've hunted most other California small game at one time or another).

It would seem dangerous to use a .22 when the squirrels are in the tree. Do most hunters only shoot when they are on the ground? Or do they make sure the tree is a back-stop when up in the tree?

Here in Ga woods, the trees are pretty dense where I hunt and by positioning oneself to use other trees as a background. Often times, the squirrels are on the side of the tree, thus the tree is a backstop. Other times (like this weekend), the squirrels were on the ground (still have to be careful of ricoches). Sometimes they are out on that limb, so you are correct, you need to understand where that bullet is going to land. Safer option would be a 12 or 20 gauge with #6 lead, but maybe that's not an option in California. Ideal gun was a 22/20 over under. Had a single shot 22 on top and a 20 gauge on bottom. Hard to find one these days. I think savage still makes one.

^^^ The same in Texas. I've learned how to call them which normally gets them on the ground or the base of the trees. You just need to know where the bullet will go. With a 22 rifle they will run and come back in 5min if you learn how to give the ALL Clear bark. With a shotgun they seam to head to the next county.
