Just picked up some Berry's .45 cal 185 gr. HBRN bullets. I looked though my load manual and just wanted to double check with some guys on here...

How does everyone feel about 5.2 grains of HP-38/W231? I'm not really sure what an ideal charge would be for these bullets. I would prefer to stick with HP-38/W231.

What are your experiences with this powder/bullet combination?

185 gr

I've just started working up loads using that same bullet and powder combination. WW 231 is my standard pistol powder and this is my first use of the Berry's bullets.
I was looking at the lower end of the powder charges for my first attempt. 4.7 grains of 231 was the most accurate load in my Colt goverment model but didn't cycle the action reliably. I didn't change out the springs so I'm sure it had too much spring for this type of load. I want to work up some mid range loads and see how they do but it doesn't look like that will happen until after the holidays. My son is home on his predeployment leave now and I'm heading down to Ft. Campbell right before New Years to see him before he leaves.
I'll post my results when I get back to the range. Please do the same.

ok, thanks.

i think i'm going to load some with 5.2 gr and than a couple with 5 and see where that takes me. it's going to be running through a FNP45 and a USP45.

The Berry's 185 gr. RNHB bullet is my favorite .45 plinking and target shooting bullet. I'm on my second 10,000 of them.

You can bump up your load to 5.5 gr., which I found to be just about perfect for that bullet with Winchester 231. I also load it with Ramshot True Blue, which works ok, too. Ramshot does list loads for that bullet, by the way.

Hope this helps.

One more question for you all: What have you been setting your OAL for this load?

1.275 is the standard in my book.

1.265 for me and RN stuff, instead of 1.270. I don't remember why, but I have a note somewhere in my log book with the reason.
