I've been playing with my old smoothbore Remington slug barrel to see what slugs shoot best out of it, as per "Slugs 101..." I have a couple of questions if anyone can help.
1) In about paragraph 16 of "Slugs 101..." it says that the KO Brenekke's are really a Forster style with an unattached wad. Is that a misprint, because on the KO box it says that they are a Forster type slug but with an attached wad.

2) In about paragraph 15, it states when discussing the Brenekke slugs that "If I had to take on an angry grizzly with a shotgun, these would be my choice." Question: Would the Brenekke "Black Magic Short Magnum" slug qualify as this type of slug?

Both the KO and the Black Magic seemed to shoot best out of my smoothbore Remington slug barrel. The Brenekke "Classic Magnum" didn't seem to shoot quite as well but this could have been due to shooter error. The only other slug that seemed to shoot well was an old Western Super X. The older Remington, Remington/Peters and Federal slugs I had lying around didn't seem to shoot as well. Thanks,

Sounds like you had some fun at the range. To the best of my knowledge the wads are attached on Breneke slugs. I prefer Breneke slugs as well and they group well out of my shotgun. If you want to try one other brand, not that you need to, the Federal TruBalls also seem to group well for me.

Yes, it was real fun. It has been a while since I shot slugs. The Wingmaster receiver I used was older and had a steel butt plate. I put a rubber Decelerator recoil pad on it and wore a Past shoulder pad and the recoil felt was pretty nil. I shot about 20 shells and was worried beforehand that I would have shoulder pain for a week. But I don't feel it at all.

To my knowledge all of the Brenneke Slugs have attached wads and the slug and wad fly together. IME the Brenneke Classic Slug Wad is attached to the base of the slug with a screw, and on the other Brenneke Slugs the wad has a friction fit into the base of the slug.

If memory serves me right, and sometimes it does, Brennekes are the slugs used by the Alaska State Police and the Alaska Game Wardens. So yes it will work on an angry grizzly if you put it in the right place :).

The PAST Recoil Shields are worth their weight in gold for shooting heavy loads in shotguns, especially when sighting in slug guns off the bench.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I once ran 250 rounds through my Mossberg 9200 just to see how well it would do with a mix bag of shotshells and how reliable it would be once it got that dirty. The gun passed with flying colors and my shoulder did too since I wore a PAST Super Mag Plus recoil shield for the extended shooting session. As for shotgun slugs I have been very pleased with the accuracy I get from Federal TruBall slugs.
