I was at a local Colonial America themed festival today (Penn's Colony) and happened across a vendor selling handmade knives, hawks and black powder accoutrements. He also had several rifles for sale. All but one were flintlock. The one that caught my eye had an unusual action, one I was never aware of. I asked the vendor about it, and he called it a "moose ear" percussion action. It was towards the end of the day and it seemed his only thoughts were towards going home, so I wasn't able to get him talking about it. Can anyone here shed some light on it? I'm curious how the action works.

My neice has a Navy Arms .36 Mule ear my brother got her when she was nine. she's nineteen now, and can ''dot your eye'' with the thing! we call her Ashley Oakley!

Man, I wish they made that in a left handed version for the T/C. I'd convert my Renegade in a hurry.

And, I REALLY like his knives. Especially the sickle knife.

Shotgun Willy,

Not sure if it was a way to convert or not. I have handled more than a few originals that had been converted with a drum and nipple but the very few original mule ears I have seen were built that way from the start. The internals would need a lot of replacing to go from a flint to mule ear.

I wasn't thinking about the lock, just a way to convert the barrel. Tap the touch-hole for a nipple, then use a different lock mechanism. Sorry for not being more specific.

Sure wish I could find my plans for the mule ear lock. I have plans for several flint and percussion locks. Too bad I can't find them.
