Question on strange Mauser attachment

A friend of mine bought a VZ-24 Mauser not too long ago (very nice rifle) and he was showing me some of the accessories that came with it.
There was a thing that looked like a small section of barrel about an inch or so long that clips to the muzzle. It actually has riflings in it too.
I am thinking that it is a muzzle protector for cleaning but I told him I would ask.
I am also thinking that it might be rifled because maybe it was made out of left over rifle barrels.
How far off am I?
Anyone know for sure what this thing is?

That sounds like the muzzle protector to me. The only one I ever saw came with my Yugo M48. The only ones I see on websites are wooden. I've heard, but without confirmation, that the steel ones are hard to find.

Don't know for sure, but I believe you're correct. I got the same thing with a 98K I got last year.

I've never seen or heard of a rifled muzzle protector. Rifling one would serve no purpose.

The only thing similar, was a device for shooting wooden bullet blank cartridges.

In Europe, blanks were sometimes loaded with wooden bullets.
A special muzzle attachment was used to insure the wooden bullet was broken up into splinters as it left the barrel, to keep anyone from being hit with one.

The Swede's have this; it threads onto the end of the barrel. On the other hand, I've never seen any VZ-24 with a threaded barrel.
 
I had a muzzle protector for my M48A. I'm not sure what happened to it but it had what LOOKED like rifling on it. It was, I seem to remember, sort of spring loaded.
 
I, too, have never seen a muzzle cover with rifling in it, nor can I see any purpose to such a thing. Nor have I ever heard of a muzzle protector (for cleaning) issued with a Mauser rifle, which was cleaned from the breech. Some muzzle covers, like the Swiss, have raised ridges on the outside to provide a grip when turning them, but not inside.

The ordinary Mauser muzzle cover could not be used with the VZ 24 anyway, unless the sight protector (which is usually installed) were removed.

Check the direction of the rifling on the little cap thingy, and compare it to the direction of the rifling in the barrel. The one I got with my M-48 was rifled the other way. I later found out that it was to encourage the wooden bullets in practice ammo to splinter and disintegrate on leaving the barrel.
