When I grew up hunting, we always wore a good bit of orange. I was up in the mountains and out hiking this weekend at our cabin and saw hunters on the way in wearing only camo. It was public lands with all the yahoos out running around.

Are times changing or is camo just for bow season?

Thanks.

In VA, the law states that blaze orange is only required during rifle season. Full camo is acceptable during bow and muzzleloader, as well as turkey season.

I'm not sure about public hunting lands...though blaze orange should probably be a requirement during any season with so many inexperienced hunters running around.

Where I go you can wear all the camo you want but just make sure you are wearing the required amount (square inches) of blaze orange. I wear a B/O vest. :)

the required amount (square inches)

If I can remember correctly, VA only requires you to wear 180 square inches of blaze orange. That qualifies as a cap or toboggan. I like to wear a vest, along with a cap during rifle season. I like to make myself as visible to other hunters as possible.

Maine requires 2 articles of Orange - a Hat that must be 100% Blaze Orange - and at least 100 sq inches on the torso - but that can be camo patterned.

New Hampshire does not require any orange at any time, but strongly recommends it at all times.

Personally, I use the Maine template...my head always has a 100% blaze hat, and my torso has a camo break-up Blaze vest.

The rest is Mossy-Oak.

However...this will be my first season with a tree stand...always a still hunter in the past. I could stow one or both of the orange articles once I'm settled in the tree and don it only for hiking in and out. But I like being seen...

I guess the big issue is if you are on private or public land.
On private land - my usual hunt - full camo, also we all have our spots/stands/blinds for years and we stay in touch through the day with radios if your moving through someones spot. . During rifle season we all carry the B/O vest for when coming down the hill at night or moving around - just to add a level of safety.
On public land - ORANGE BABY!!! Been shot at once - didnt like it at all (I sounded like a dear I guess) needless to say he missed, but he got my attention.
I am also much more selective on the public land I hunt - long searches for the hard to find areas to keep away from the knucleheads.

In many places, no orange is required during archery-only season. Come ML or gun, we have to have 500 inches total on us - quite a bit.

Most places I hunt, orange is not required during archery season, while hunting migratory birds, or turkey hunting. I wear an orange vest and orange/chartreuse hat on the way to and from my stand, but usually take it off once in the stand. (not legal)

I do not hunt public land after the gun season starts anymore.
